Report: Borussia Moenchengladbach leading race for Gio Reyna

The Gio Reyna transfer saga has reportedly taken a new twist.

Bundesliga club Borussia Moenchengladbach is leading the race for Reyna, jumping in front of Serie A side Parma, Sky Sports reported Wednesday. Gladbach has offered roughly €3-3.5 million plus add-ons to Borussia Dortmund for the American midfielder.

No official decision has been made, and Parma remains interested in Reyna, according to the report.

Parma had been in talks to acquire Reyna since late-July, offering €6 million to Dortmund for the 22-year-old. Borussia Dortmund rejected the deal, continuing to hold out for closer to €8 million.

However, the lengthy delay in agreeing to a deal has led to Borussia Moenchengladbach entering the race for Reyna. MLS club LAFC was also linked to Reyna, but talks never escalated.

A move to Gladbach would reunite Reyna with former NYCFC academy and current U.S. men’s national team teammate Joe Scally. Scally is entering his fifth full season with the club, making 133 appearances to date across all competitions.

Reyna is coming off one of his least productive seasons in Dortmund colors. He scored two goals and added one assist in 26 appearances, but registered just 627 minutes of playing time.

Reyna has failed to reach the 1,000-minute mark in each of the last two seasons, which also featured a loan spell at Nottingham Forest during the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.

A decrease in playing time has also led to Reyna missing out on U.S. men’s national team opportunities. He has earned just one cap in 2025, a 21-minute cameo against Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place match.

Borussia Monchengladbach opens Bundesliga play on Sunday against Hamburg while Borussia Dortmund faces St. Pauli on Saturday.

  1. Johnnyrazor,

As previously mentioned, Gio was 100% moving in this window, and the final transfer fee would be closer to Parma’s initial offer $6M Euros ), than Dortmund’s initial price tag ( $10M Euros).

Parma’s initial offer was a month ago and each day that went by, Gio, and any potential buying team, became significantly more leveraged, hence the even lower initial payment on this transfer.

Props to Borussia Monchengladbach for a savvy piece of business, swooping in late in the transfer window to secure and even better price tag on Gio…$3.5M Euros, with potential add-ons taking it to $7.5M Euros. In the end, this is a sweetheart deal for BM and Gio, and as a result, each of their respective interests are 100% aligned.

For Borussia Dortmund, this is just the latest example of how they are a current shit show, engaging in amateur hour business, and no longer an ideal destination for the most promising youth soccer players.

Lastly, it is important to point out, the transfer taking place now confirms the pissing contest that was going on between Gio and Dortmund. At this price tag, this transfer could have been consummated at least a month ago, if not earlier in the summer, but Dortmund played games, and in the end they benefited absolutely nothing, other than to hold Gio back from landing at his new club and getting a full preseason in with said new club. Clearly, amateur hour and spiteful from Dortmund.

  2. Blinding arrogance to choose BMG over Parma. Reactions in Germany are that he’s made a puzzling decision:

“Gladbach have arranged to acquire Reyna from BVB for a transfer fee totaling €7m including bonuses. The 22-year-old’s chances of breaking into BMG head coach Gerardo Seoane’s XI immediately remain slim as the Foals are well stacked in attack outside the center-forward position. Reyna still appears ready to take his chances.”

Maybe having an emotional support Scally will help him reach his potential.

    • I’m starting to change my mind.

BMG play a 4-3-3… a 10, 6 and 8. Last season the ten position was filled with Plea and Stoeger. (Plea is now covering for the injured Pepi at PSV and will probably do some of Tillman’s job once Pepi returns). Plea played all along the attacking front for BMG…including at the 10. When Plea wasn’t at the 10 it was 31 year old Stoeger. Those two players basically split the time at the 10. At 31 Stoeger can’t do a whole season there anymore. And Stoeger is not a goal threat (more of a playmaker) whereas Plea was. Gio looks will be the Plea replacement. If that is true does that mean he will be on the wing sometimes? In any case a playmaker that can score goals would be an upgrade – especially with Kleindienst out through October at least.

Side bar – funny how much Plea is floating around USMNT players….

  3. Gio should play at whatever club pays him the most. Period. If that means going to Parma then do that, if MG is better, do that. If sitting on the bench at Dortmund pays more do that. Gio and every other soccer player is one rash tackle, one slip in the bathtub, one uneven patch of grass away from having his career ended. Having money in the bank trumps all. He now has a family to think of after all.

  4. Personally, given the style of play, I think Italy would be the best fit for Reyna. But Moenchengladbach is probably a better club. Whatever he chooses, he needs to get playing time and that means leaving Dortmund.

  5. If anything, Reyna needs to get rid of his sports’ agent and get a competent one. That Nottingham Forest loan was a disaster and did nothing to help his value. And now, he can’t get away from Dortmund (with Dortmund not helping either) and can’t get any minutes. And in a World Cup year.

      • I mean to be fair Jorge Mendes kind of pushed him to Forest even though he knew his client Nuno Esposito Santos (the manager) wasn’t really excited about him and then when AC Milan had interest in Gio instead sold them on his bigger name client Joao Felix instead. So maybe not all the Reyna’s fault.

      • ac, TX3,

Claudio and Danielle may have had clout with the Clown Car dickheads USSF. But I sincerely doubt BVB gave a flying fuck what the Reynas thought or did.

This is about Gio and BVB and their weird relationship.

If you remember BVB only agreed to let Gio do the NF loan if he signed the extension. Had Gio not done that his contract would have already been up a while ago.

  6. Gio should go to a team with a USMNT striker. Norwich would be best. He needs the toughness England provides. PSV, meh, but ok if he can link up with Pepsi. Monaco, is that where halogen plays? Go play with the orange crush gio. Season long loan. Smart move for you, your career. And your national team prospects. This is a good move all around. Unless of course Sargent leaves. Then we got a problem. But I think he can get loaned later than Sargent can leave

  7. Gladbach has offered roughly €3-3.5 million plus add-ons to Borussia Dortmund
Parma has offered roughly €6 million to Dortmund (which was rejected) and are holding out for €8 million

Meanwhile, Colorado Rapids, an MLS Team, GO AFTER Paxten Aaronson from Eintracht Frankfurt for $7,000,000 upfront fee, alongside a further $1.5m (€1.3m) in add-ons……something REYNA CAN’T EVEN GET IN EUROPE???? bruh, the disrespect!!!!

I’m starting to think MLS, particularly LAFC with a high-profile player like Son Heung-Minas a teammate…….or maybe even San Diego FC, is not a bad place for this kid to land, because Gio is not valued in Europe AT ALL!!!!

    Wow

  8. Not sure how 6 million wasn’t enough for Parma how they’d deal with BM’s 3.5? Must be some great add-ons. Could this be Dortmund floating this to push Parma higher?
-He’d have Joe there, and they’re friends from their NYCFC academy days.

    • JR,

Supposedly, the kicker here is Gio.
Remember how Juve got all bent with Timo vetoing Forest?

      Gio can veto Parma.

He can say he prefers to go to BMG and play with Joe.
If Gio is doing that, that would explain why the 3.5 suddenly is now the best offer.
Slick move by BMG or Joe or Gio. Kehl might get fired over this.

      • Yes but Juventus still got 24 million plus for Tim and Mbangula when they were going to sell them to Forest for 22 million. They’re going to have to come up significantly even if Gio does want to go there. Dortmund isn’t going to give their league rival a 50% off deal even if Gio now wants to go there.

    • Parma recently signed a 22 year old croatian CF Matija Frigan for 10 million from Westerlo. He just blew out his ACL
And they recently sold their center back Leoni to Liverpool for 35 million.

I don’t know how these events will affect their interest in Gio but you’d think they would.
