USWNT falls to No. 2 in latest FIFA rankings

For the first time since June 2024, there will be a new leader in the FIFA Women’s Rankings.

Spain has overtaken the U.S. women’s national team for the top spot in August’s rankings, FIFA announced Thursday. The USWNT previously held the No. 1 spot since June 2024 but has now dropped to No. 2.

Emma Hayes’ squad have won all three of their matches since that June-July window, downing the Republic of Ireland twice by respective 4-0 scorelines. The Americans also defeated CONCACAF rivals Canada 3-0 during that span.

The USWNT have won their last five matches and eight of their 10 overall this year.

Yazmeen Ryan and Sam Coffey each tallied two goals apiece during the summer victories.

The USWNT will return to action in October for a pair of home friendlies against Portugal. In addition, U.S. Soccer announced that a third match will be revealed at a later date.

Sweden, reigning European Champions England, and Germany round out the top five in the rankings.

France, Brazil, Japan, Canada, and Korea DPR are ranked No. 6-10, with Les Bleus serving as the only team to move up out of that group.

  1. I know it’s a ridiculous formula for ranking. It’s really a “scoreboard” situation and should be based on most recent completions/tournaments. If anything it should provide more motivation for the USWNT. Especially considering the USWNT has not competed at full strength for sometime now
A more interesting debate is what countries at various positions have an advantage over the US? Like Spain has Bonnati who I feel is the best at her position

  2. Spain loses to England in the women’s euro final, and they not only stay ahead of England, but also supplant the USWNT in the top spot? Interesting
