Antonee Robinson hasn’t played a large part in Fulham’s six matches so far this season, but he is expected to see some playing time this week.
Robinson is backed to see some time in Fulham’s EFL Cup third round tie vs. Cambridge United on Tuesday, Fulham manager Marco Silva confirmed Monday. The U.S. men’s national team left back had struggled for consistent playing time during August and September’s schedule after fighting back to full fitness.
Robinson underwent knee surgery in May and was not part of the USMNT’s CONCACAF Gold Cup roster.
Silva confirmed that Robinson’s recent absence from Fulham’s 3-1 English Premier League victory over Brentford was not serious and precautionary.
“No it’s not a setback, he’s come from a surgery and he’s a player who needs to be in physical conditions almost perfect because this game comes from his athleticism and all that stuff,” Silva said in a press conference Monday.
“We are going to have another session before the game, and after that we are going to take a decision [on Robinson],” Silva added. “Probably it’s going to be [Robinson] in contention for the game. That was our aim before the Brentford game to give him some more days to keep working on his fitness and all that stuff, his confidence and to be able to try to have as many minutes as he can tomorrow. It’s a chance for him to be involved, yes.”
Robinson made 38 appearances for the Cottagers last season, producing 10 assists in all competitions. The 28-year-old’s absence has led to Ryan Sessegnon filling in at left back, but a healthy Robinson should see him jump back as Silva’s No. 1 option.
A strong outing on Tuesday could see Robinson back in Premier League play on Sunday when Fulham visits Aston Villa.
