Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Maloney, McKennie, and more

10 months since his last club start, Lennard Maloney did not disappoint in UEFA Conference League action.

Maloney started and played 90 minutes as Mainz defeated Zrinjski Mostar 1-0 at home, helping Mainz earn its second victory of the league phase. The 26-year-old midfielder won seven duels, drew two fouls, made five interceptions, and made five defensive recoveries.

Nelson Weiper scored the lone goal of the match for Mainz, who rebounded from back-to-back Bundesliga defeats. In what was also his first start for Mainz since joining from FC Heidenheim, Maloney provided Bo Henriksen with a glimpse of what he could deliver as a consistent starter.

Maloney will now aim to retain his starting spot for Sunday’s league trip to Stuttgart.

Elsewhere in Europe, Weston McKennie and Juventus’ valiant effort in Madrid fell short. Tim Weah started but Marseille lost to Sporting Lisbon. Folarin Balogun started in Monaco’s goal-less draw with Tottenham.

In England, Patrick Agyemang set up Derby County’s winning goal vs. Norwich City. Haji Wright and Aidan Morris both featured as their clubs’ stayed No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in the EFL Championship table.

In Mexico, Richie Ledezma was sent off in Chivas’ Liga MX loss to Queretaro.
