Brad Guzan to retire at end of 2025 season

Brad Guzan’s 21-year professional career is coming to an end.

Guzan announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the 2025 MLS season. The 41-year-old should make his final club appearance on Saturday when Atlanta United hosts DC United in both clubs’ final league match of the year.

An Illinois native, Guzan played collegiately at the University of South Carolina before beginning his MLS career with Chivas USA. After three years with Chivas USA, Guzan made the jump to England, joining Premier League club Aston Villa.

Guzan made over 170 appearances for the Villains during his time in Birmingham, helping the club reach the FA Cup Final in 2014-15. He also spent time on loan at Hull City in the EFL Championship in 2010-11.

Guzan also spent one season with Middlesbrough, but made the move back to MLS in 2017 after the club’s relegation. The veteran goalkeeper lifted three trophies in over 260 appearances with Atlanta United, winning MLS Cup in 2018 and also celebrating a U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup title lifts.

After debuting for the U.S. men’s national team in 2006, Guzan proceeded to earn 64 caps for his country. His most productive years came in 2015-16, earning 25 caps over that two-year span.

Guzan was part of three CONCACAF Gold Cup-winning squads in 2007, 2017, and 2021. His 34 victories as a USMNT starter are the fourth-most in program history.
