SBI USMNT Man of the Match: Haji Wright

Mauricio Pochettino has quite the decision to make in regard to the starting No. 9 job.

Haji Wright scored twice on Tuesday in the U.S. men’s national team’s 2-1 comeback victory over Australia. Wright’s first multi-goal outing at the international level since March 2024 earned him SBI Man of the Match honors.

Wright helped the USMNT draw level in the first half, showing great strength and clinical abilities in the 18-yard box. The 27-year-old was played into the box by Cristian Roldan’s pass before right-footing a shot past Matthew Ryan for a 1-1 equalizer.

After helping the USMNT tie the match, Wright called his own number again early in the second half. Roldan’s over-the-top ball allowed Wright to race into the 18-yard box before cutting back onto his left foot and slotting home past a diving Ryan.

It marked Wright’s 17th goal of 2025 for club and country.

Wright was substituted off in the 64th minute, being replaced by fellow in-form forward Folarin Balogun. He finished his outing with two duels won, two offensive chances created, and one dribble completed.

Wright edged Cristian Roldan, Tim Weah, and Chris Richards for Man of the Match honors.

“I believe in myself and the players around me,” Wright told TNT during a postmatch interview. “I have known these guys for mostly all of my life and playing in front of this crowd was special.”

What did you think of Wright’s performance? Do you see him overtaking Balogun for the starting No. 9 role? How has he impressed you?

  1. Haji Wright, Man of the Match…….and A VERY CLOSE SECOND WAS CRISTIAN ROLDAN. Very impactful in this game and HIS actions / quick-thinking lead to both goals. He is proving that he is still relevant on offense and defense when it comes to the USMNT.
