Women’s UCL: Tullis-Joyce shines in Man United win, Fox features for Arsenal

Matchday 2 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League concluded on Thursday with two more U.S. women’s national team players enjoying victories.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Manchester United edged Atletico Madrid 1-0 in league phase play. The USWNT goalkeeper stole the show for the WSL visitors, making six saves to preserve a clean sheet.

Fridolina Rolfo’s 24th-minute goal was all the Red Devils needed to claim three points from their trip to Spain. Despite a 41st-minute red card to Dominique Janssen, Marc Skinner’s squad outlasted Atletico Madrid on their own turf.

Alexia Fernandez Diaz was sent off for the hosts with 16 minutes to play, harming their chances for an equalizing goal.

Tullis-Joyce, 28, debuted for the USWNT earlier this year and has earned a total of three caps to date. She will now head to the United States ahead of a three-match international window.

Emily Fox starts in Arsenal’s win over Benfica

Emily Fox was also among the winners in Thursday’s four-match UWCL slate.

Fox started and played 85 minutes as reigning Champions League winners Arsenal defeated Portuguese hosts Benfica 2-0. The veteran full back helped the Lady Gunners rebound from an opening night loss to Lyon nine days ago.

Following a goal-less first half, Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 57th minute through Beth Mead’s opener.

Alessia Russo delivered the insurance goal for Arsenal, three minutes before stoppage time.

It was a confident performance from Arsenal, who out-shot, out-passed, and out-possessed Benfica at the Estádio da Luz.

Fox will also join up with the aforementioned Tullis-Joyce at USWNT camp next week.
