Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Richards, Balogun, and more

Crystal Palace’s positive run in the UEFA Conference League continued Thursday with American defender Chris Richards logging his latest shift for the English Premier League club.

Richards played the full 90 minutes as Oliver Glasner’s Eagles defeated Eredivisie visitors AZ Alkmaar 3-1 at Selhurst Park. The Alabama native watched as an early goal from Maxence Lacroix paired with a brace from Ismaila Sarr helped the South London side move to eighth place in the league table.

Richards, who was not called into Mauricio Pochettino’s November U.S. men’s national team roster, won 11 duels and made six tackles in the result. The 25-year-old was one of the better performers on the night as Crystal Palace earned its second win of the league phase.

Richards and Crystal Palace will aim to head into the November international break in flying colors with a victory over M23 derby rivals Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

In Europe, Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi both found the back of the net in UEFA Champions League play. Yunus Musah helped close out Atalanta’s 1-0 road win over Marseille. Auston Trusty and Celtic were thumped in Europa League play at Midtjylland.

In England, Josh Sargent assisted once in Norwich City’s road draw with Ethan Horvath and Sheffield Wednesday. Dom Dwyer scored in EFL Trophy action.
