Folarin Balogun scores in Champions League, continues hot run of form

Folarin Balogun is the U.S. men’s national team’s in-form striker this fall.

Balogun scored once on Wednesday in AS Monaco’s 2-2 UEFA Champions League draw with Cypriot side Pafos FC. The American forward now has five goals in his last seven appearances for club and country.

Takumi Minamino opened the scoring for Monaco in the fifth minute, but Pafos FC would equalize not long after. Veteran defender David Luiz made it 1-1 after slotting home his first goal of the season.

Balogun regained the lead for Sébastien Pocognoli’s squad in the 28th minute, picking up a poor clearance from Neofytos Michael and slotting home.

Monaco hung onto the lead for most of the second half until Pafos FC used an own goal from Mohammed Salisu to earn one point at home.

Balogun played 89 minutes in the match, taking his tally up to six for the season.

Monaco will resume Ligue 1 play on Saturday at home against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.

  1. A notable UCL week for the Nats. After a great showing on Tuesday, Balogun scores, Dest & Pepi contribute in a big win over Liverpool, Cardoso gets a start, and Musah makes a cameo. It is going to be an interesting winter season.
