Malik Tillman scores first Bayer Leverkusen goal in two months

It was a positive return to Bundesliga action for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Malik Tillman.

Tillman scored once and added one assist in Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-1 road win over Wolfsburg on Saturday. It marked the U.S. men’s national team attacker’s first club goal since September 21 in all competitions.

Tillman had an early say in the match, teeing up Jonas Hofmann for Leverkusen’s opening goal after three minutes. It was Tillman’s first Bundesliga assist of the season and one that gave the visitors an early advantage at the Volkswagen Arena.

Edmond Tapsoba doubled the visitors lead in the 24th minute before Tillman extended Leverkusen’s lead to 3-0 before the interval. Patrik Schick played an upfield pass for Tillman to race onto before the 23-year-old slotted home into the bottom corner on a breakaway.

Denis Vavro pulled one goal back for Wolfsburg after halftime, but Bayer Leverkusen would hang on for all three points.

Tillman completed his 64-minute performance with a 92% passing completion rate, two duels won, and one tackle made.

Bayer Leverkusen will next head to face Manchester City on Tuesday in UEFA Champions League action.

  1. Very good goal by him.
But that first hofmann goal really wasnt an assist from Tillman. He whiffed on the shot. Didnt get a touch on the ball.

  2. Bayer Leverkusen is playing a 3-4-2-1 (more attacking 3-4-3) formation and Malik Tillman is thriving in this system…….awesome to see, as we are going to need this “attacking prowess” in the World Cup.
    Absolutely awesome kid…..

  3. If you check out “Away Days” on YouTube, Tillman was gracious enough to participate in a jersey swap with the channel host after he scored against ‘Gladbach.
