Patrick Agyemang scores second goal of season for Derby County

Derby County are flying up the EFL Championship table and American striker Patrick Agyemang has played a major role in the club’s recent success.

Agyemang scored his second league goal of the season on Saturday as John Eustace’s men defeated Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Ewood Park. The result marked the Rams’ fifth-straight victory, moving them up to 10th place and two points out of the top-six.

Carlton Morris continued his hot run of form by propelling the visitors in front 1-0 after 19 minutes. The veteran forward made it five goals in his last three matches for Derby County and 10 goals overall in league play this season.

Agyemang doubled Derby’s lead before halftime with a superb finish. Joe Ward’s dangerous cross from the right wing was headed home by Agyemang, giving the U.S. men’s national team forward a day-late birthday present.

Yuki Ohashi pulled a goal back for Blackburn Rovers in the 66th minute, but Derby County would hang on for their sixth league victory of the campaign.

Agyemang played 72 minutes in the match, taking his goal contributions up to five this season in all competitions (two goals, three assists). The now 25-year-old Agyemang was happy to get on the scoresheet and praised Ward’s delivery for helping him achieve that on Saturday.

“It’s great,” Agyemang said in a postmatch club interview. “Obviously I know how difficult this league is. It takes time to adapt to, but the guys are helping me get in good positions. The service from Wardy [Joe Ward] was incredible. Very happy to get the birthday goal.”

Eustace praised Agyemang’s finish while also following suit in crediting Ward for providing the service on the goal.

“It was [a great birthday present for Agyemang] and what a fantastic ball from Wardy [Joe Ward],” Eustace said. “We knew we could attack them this way, great ball and a superb header.”

Agyemang will get a short break in club action as the November international break kicks off. He was not included in the USMNT roster this time around and will have to wait until March for his next opportunity to impress head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Derby County resumes its league schedule on Nov. 22 against Watford.

  1. Good ronsee him doing well since his return from injury. Looking forward to his continues growth, so the US has many options going into the 2030 cycle if he doesn’t make the WC team.
