Alyssa Thompson will surely remember her first goal as a WSL player.
Thompson scored a sensational goal on Saturday as Chelsea tied London rivals Arsenal 1-1 in WSL action at the Emirates Stadium. The U.S. women’s national team attacker played 86 minutes in the match, teaming up with international teammate Catarina Macario atop the Chelsea attack.
Thompson needed just nine minutes to break the deadlock and propel the league-leaders ahead 1-0. After laying off a pass to fellow attacker Johanna Kaneryd, Thompson eventually received a back pass before one-timing a looping a shot into the far-left corner.
It marked her second goal for Chelsea in all competitions.
Despite holding a 1-0 lead for majority of the match, Chelsea’s backline were eventually broken down ahead of second-half stoppage time. Alessia Russo equalized for the Gunners in the 87th minute, giving Arsenal a share of the spoils.
Thompson played 86 minutes and Macario played 72 minutes for Chelsea while USWNT right back Emily Fox played 90 minutes for Arsenal. Naomi Girma was an unused substitute for Chelsea in the match.
Chelsea remains top of the WSL table on 20 points but could drop down to second place if Manchester City wins on Sunday. Arsenal sit in fourth place after the comeback draw.
All four players will turn their attentions towards UEFA Women’s Champions League action this week.
