Tim Weah enjoyed a positive return to Ligue 1 action on Friday, three years after he delivered on the world’s biggest stage.
Weah scored his first league goal of the season for Marseille in a 5-1 road victory over Nice. The U.S. men’s national team winger/wingback helped Roberto De Zerbi’s squad move top of the table with the result.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang propelled the visitors ahead after 11 minutes before Mason Greenwood doubled Marseille’s lead before halftime.
Greenwood extended Marseille’s lead to 3-0 in the 53rd minute before Weah added his name to the scoresheet in emphatic fashion. Weah gathered possession on the right side of the Nice box before drilling a right-footed missile into the top-left corner.
It marked his second goal of the season in all competitions.
Mohamed Ali-Cho pulled a consolation goal back after the hour mark for Nice, but Marseille would make it 5-1 through Igor Paixao’s insurance tally.
Weah played the full 90 minutes at right back, logging his 12th appearance of the season.
The 25-year-old will surely have good memories of November 21 after scoring the USMNT’s first goal back at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in a 1-1 group stage draw with Wales.
Marseille will next host Newcastle United in UEFA Champions League action on Tuesday night at the Orange Velodrome.

Smashed it home. Dest and Weah will be battling for that RWB starting role.
They could both be starters at WB if Jedi isn’t able to get healthy, which would be crazy considering we still have 7 months until the WC, but you never know
