Americans Abroad Midweek Preview: Tillman, McKennie, and more

German side Bayer Leverkusen claimed an important three points in its last UEFA Champions League encounter against Premier League opposition and Kasper Hjulmund’s squad will seek to the same at the BayArena on Wednesday.

Malik Tillman and his Leverkusen teammates welcome Newcastle United to town in both clubs’ sixth league phase match of the competition. Tillman played 80 minutes on Saturday as Leverkusen suffered a road defeat at the hands of Augsburg.

The U.S. men’s national team midfielder has contributed three goals in 14 appearances for the club since joining last summer from PSV. Tillman has only scored once in his last five matches, but remains a key playmaker for the squad this fall.

A victory over the visiting Magpies would propel Leverkusen over their EPL opponents and move them closer to the top-eight of the UCL standings.

Elsewhere in Europe, Weston McKennie and Juventus take on Cypriot side Pafos FC. The UEFA Women’s Champions League continues with Lindsey Heaps and Lyon visiting Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Manchester United. Catarina Macario and Chelsea face Roma. Chris Richards and Tanner Tessmann continue their respective European schedules in the Conference League and Europa League respectively.

In England, Josh Sargent and Norwich City visit Sheffield United in EFL Championship play. Haji Wright and Coventry City take on Preston North End.

  1. Has Allerghri forgotten how to use substitutes? Tw games on the trot so far with Milan down – or at least not winning – and he is refusing to use subs. . . . like Pulisic.

    • I take that back. I wrote my note post – typos and all (sorry) at minute 62 of the game. Minute 66 CP is subbed on Minute 67 CP Scores to tie the game. Much better than the 80th minute subs in the Copa d’Italia last week.
