Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Scally, Pepi, and more

Goals have been few and far between for American defender Joe Scally in Europe but Sunday was one of those memorable moments for him.

Scally scored his first goal of the season as Borussia Moenchengladbach rolled past Augsburg 4-0 in their return to Bundesliga action. It marked the U.S. men’s national team defender’s first goal since October 2023 and his third overall goal contribution this season.

Scally needed just eight minutes to boost the hosts in front, finishing off a rebound in the box for a 1-0 lead.

Kevin Diks extended Gladbach’s lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute before Haris Tabakovic made it 3-0 before halftime. Tabakovic would cap off the scoring from Borussia-Park, giving Eugen Polanski’s squad a four-goal advantage after the hour mark.

Scally, who played 85 minutes as a right wing back, also won six duels and produced three shots in total. The result for Gladbach snapped a three-match losing run and moved them up to 10th place in the league standings.

Hoffenheim awaits for Scally and Gladbach next this Wednesday as a busy return to league action continues.

In England, Antonee Robinson and Fulham advanced past Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough in FA Cup play. Chris Richards and Haji Wright were among those American players to suffer elimination from the tournament. Alyssa Thompson scored in Chelsea’s dominant home WSL win over West Ham United.

In Germany, Malik Tillman went the distance in Bayer Leverkusen’s home loss to Stuttgart. Damion Downs made his Hamburg debut in a road loss to Freiburg. Kevin Paredes made his first Wolfsburg appearance since April 2025.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and AC Milan used a late equalizer to tie Fiorentina. Yunus Musah featured off of the bench in Atalanta’s home win.

Elsewhere, Ricardo Pepi scored in PSV’s win over Excelsior, but left the match with a broken arm. Sergino Dest went the distance for PSV. Danny Leyva made his Necaxa debut in a road win over Santos Laguna. Auston Trusty and Celtic got back to winning ways against Dundee United.

    • Reportedly for $18 million, that’s a big fee for MLS. But smaller than Wolfsburg supposedly offered Norwich this summer.

      Reply
      • True. But Sargent didn’t want the move. He has been eyeing MLS the past couple of years. Im sure he will get a nice pay raise. And Norwich can reinvest that money.

      • I’m not sure he’ll make much more. He’s making 1.7 now or 2.1 with bonuses. Hard to find an exact comparable but Mihailovic in Toronto makes 2.1 and Paxten Aaronson makes 2 million coming home from Europe. I could see 3-3.5 since Toronto historical over spend, so double your salary is pretty good. Comparable if not less than Wolfsburg likely offered. Certainly enough you could live in Toronto during the season and have some leftover for that Florida home in the offseason.

      • Most Bundesliga salaries arent big. My guess Toronto will pay him close to 4 mil a year.
Average Bundesliga salary is 1.7 Euros.

      • That’s interesting.

Not really much difference between the Championship or MLS in terms of level these days…MLS teams are better players 1-11, Championship squads significantly deeper players 12-24.

Sargent’s been ice-cold in the Championship lately, so it’s not a slam-dunk he turns it around coming back to MLS – actually, well, coming to MLS, since he’s never been here before. So I’m genuinely curious how well he does this side of the pond…another data point, as I like to say, in how various leagues stack up against each other. But if he’s expecting a step down in level and easy pickings he may be surprised.

      • 2tone don’t be so lazy. Wolfsburg team average 2.1 million euros and they have ten players that make over 3 million. They’re starter before injury Amoura makes 4.7 million euros, so Josh would have been in the 3-5 range at Wolfsburg.

      • Q: I think he’ll be fine, if Toronto have a plan to get him the ball in good spots. Sam Surridge was primarily a Championship player and was one of the top scorers last year. Coincidentally, his scoring picked up once Bj Callahan got there. I’m not sure Robin Fraser in Toronto is known for his offensive tactics. Latte Lah did not have a good first year after back to back double digit goals in the Championship, but Atlanta was terrible. Will Tata help him be more productive this year?
