Ethan Horvath is heading back stateside for the next chapter of his club career.
The New York Red Bulls have agreed to a deal in principle to acquire Horvath from English third-tier side Cardiff City, sources close to the player confirmed to SBI. Horvath is expected to arrive in Harrison, New Jersey next week to finalize the move.
The Athletic was the first to report on the Red Bulls moving close to signing Horvath.
The 30-year-old was signed on loan in August by Sheffield Wednesday after first-choice goalkeeper Pierce Charles suffered a serious injury which kept him out for close to four months. Horvath made 16 appearances for the Owls, registering two clean sheets.
He also earned Man of the Match honors in Sheffield Wednesday’s EFL Cup victory over Premier League visitors Leeds United last summer.
Horvath has played for several clubs in Europe including Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest, Luton Town, and Club Brugge. He made 36 appearances over two seasons for Cardiff City before being loaned out.
In total, he’s made 230 club appearances abroad.
Horvath remains a goalkeeping option for the U.S. men’s national team heading into the FIFA World Cup later this year. He’s earned 10 senior caps to date and will now work under former USMNT midfielder Michael Bradley, who was named the Red Bulls new head coach earlier this winter.

As a longtime RBNY and USMNT fan, let’s goooooo! (and yes, happy he’ll finally have consistent playing time too)
Now that’s what I like to hear….. Stop bouncing around from one English Championship team to the next. Come back to MLS and be a regular starter on a good team.
Red Bulls may be the team in the East besides Miami this upcoming season.
