Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Weah faces Tessmann, and more

Lyon and Marseille face off in Ligue 1’s headlining contest this weekend with Tanner Tessmann and Tim Weah both aiming to lead their clubs to a crucial three points.

Tessmann and Lyon sit in third place heading into Sunday’s showdown, holding a five-point advantage over their opponents. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder has made 31 appearances in all competitions as he continues to play a large role for the club. With Europa League and Coupe De France trophies still to play for this season, Tessmann should see more starts under Paulo Fonseca.

Weah has also remained a consistent starter in Roberto De Zerbi’s squad this winter despite the club’s recent struggles of late. With three goals and four assists in all competitions, Weah has been one of Marseille’s better two-way players this season. However, Marseille has only won one of its last six matches in all competitions and are in danger of falling out of the top-four picture if things continue.

Lyon earned a 1-0 league victory in the two clubs’ previous matchup but Marseille has won its last three home Ligue 1 head-to-head matchups.

In England, Tyler Adams and Bournemouth face off with Sunderland in EPL play. Brenden Aaronson and Leeds United host Manchester City. Haji Wright and Coventry City host Stoke City as they aim to stay in first place in the EFL Championship.

Elsewhere in France, Folarin Balogun and Monaco host Angers.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and AC Milan visit Cremonese while Weston McKennie and Juventus visit AS Roma.

    • I know the answer is always supposed to be 10 and some people might deride me for posing the question at all but my thinking was…If I had just recently transferred from Orlando City in MLS and had just a couple run outs in La Liga…I’d probably be pretty ok with riding the pine today. So I’d say a 5 for me. But I suppose that’s why I’ve never had a lot of success in competitive athletics – lol Raphina would scare me – lol.

  1. Lund continues to play well for Koln. Interesting how we all have forgotten about a consistent starter/ important player at LWB for a Bundesliga team.

    • It’s not that fans have forgotten him, it’s that Poch hasn’t called him in over a year. He’s not forgotten he’s irrelevant. It’s like saying why have people forgotten Miljevic, DeJuan Jones, or Eneli. Because they aren’t getting called up.

      Reply
      • Not that I’d disagree with you JR but if player X is ballin in a top five Euro league maybe they are more relevant than MLS players like you have lsted (big D Jones fan, here, btw).

Jedi isn’t healthy and he was getting torched like training cone by Dorgu…he hasn’t been good when he as played if we are at all being honest. That means the Left back is a bit open. Considering the options on the left you have to put moving Dest there as big option which knocks on to open up the right – Freeman, Scally, McKennie, Weah….Lund? Depending on how Poch see the other players maybe McKennie (MF) is off that list and maybe the same for Weah (FWD)…then you are left with Freeman (possible CB?), Scally and…Lund.

My point is calling him irrelevant is a little hyperbolic…maybe??

      • MoO: maybe irrelevant is harsh, but Poch has given no indication he’s at all interested in him. 5 or 6 camps Lund has been available for without a call. Poch seems happy with Arfsten and Dest. Freeman doesn’t play LB and Lund doesn’t play RB.
        ——————-
I’m not sure the term “ballin out” is quite accurate either. His FotMob rating is usually in the mid 6s. He’s been playing as a LWB and has 0g 1a all season.

      • MotO

        * Provisional Roster (35-55 players): Due around May 11, 2026.
        * Final Squad (23-26 players): Due by June 1, 2026.
        * Mandatory Release Period: Clubs must release players for national team duty by May 25, 2026.

+ The final 23-26 players have to come from the provisional list.
+ In the event of injuries, the USMNT can replace players up to 24 hours before the WC starts but the replacements have to come from the original provisional list

“My point is calling him irrelevant is a little hyperbolic…maybe??”

No more hyperbolic than considering Lund as a possibility in the first place. It depends on how far you want to argue a point.

Lund may still be “relevant” but is he a realistic possibility? Probably not. He has not played for the USMNT since Oct 2024 vs Mexico.

Until May 11 injuries will probably be the most important variable. That is how the Lunds of the world go from “irrelevant” to “realistic possibilities”

Until May 11, even players like Stefan Frei, Fossey, Shaq Moore, Julian Green, Vassiliev, Duane Holmes, Dom Dwyer, Bryan Reynolds, Paul Arriola, Jordan Morris, Gyasi Zardes etc……..they are all “relevant.”
