Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Balogun, Dike, and more

Folarin Balogun’s hot run of goalscoring form continued Sunday with the American striker capping off a comeback Ligue 1 draw for AS Monaco.

Balogun scored his 18th goal of the season across all competitions in Monaco’s 2-2 home draw with Auxerre. It marked Balogun’s eighth-consecutive Ligue 1 match with a goal, moving him one match back from tying the league record.

Kevin Danois and Lassine Sinayoko both scored in the first half to give the visitors a 2-0 halftime lead. However, AS Monaco would rally in the second half to earn a share of the spoils.

Ansu Fati trimmed the deficit in the 56th minute before Balogun stepped up from the penalty spot and tied the match three minutes later. Balogun now has 10 goals in his last nine appearances in all competitions.

Despite falling out of the top-six, AS Monaco will take something from the fight back ahead of its final four matches of the season.

Up next for Balogun and his AS Monaco teammates is a trip to Toulouse on April 25 before final matches against Metz, Lille, and Strasbourg.

    • I have been really impressed with 18 year old Snyder Brunell at Seattle this season too. Can play multiple midfield positions.

      Reply
      • Not sure how many minutes he’ll get now that Seattle is out of CL. Schmetzer likes to rotate to keep his roster fit and in form so maybe the drop off won’t be huge

    • Leading MLS in chances created (not Americans in MLS, all players) have to believe the attention Werner draws is helping him get more time to create.

      Reply
      • Warner was out injured the past 3 weeks. First MLS game back this weekend. I would imagine Tsakiris numbers will get even better with Werner now healthy.

  1. Americans Not Abroad:
    In the mix guys:
-Luna 1g 1a, was very good, RSL are a lot of fun and really took it to SD (without several key defensive players)
    -Roldan 2g vs StL
-Ream taken off at half with potential groin issue
-Freese 2 saves -0.50 goals prevented
-M.Robinson 64 mins left down 3-1 to Chicago, was on minutes restriction.
-Celantano 3 saves credit -0.97 goals prevented against Chicago
-Brady, 7 saves credit with 1.99 goals prevented in 3-3 draw with Cincy
-Turner 3 saves 0.18 goals prevented
    – Schulte 1 save -0.77 goals prevented (The Crew awful, pay Wilfred whatever it takes to bring him back)
-Arfsten 1g in 2-1 loss to NE
-Berhalter 74 mins 1 post hit in 3-0 win against SKC
    Others:
-Sargent had 3 shots saved in 3-3 draw with Austin
-Gozo looks ready, 1 asst in 90 minutes
-Ferreira 1 asst in 37 minutes (started midweek) in 4-1 win
-Red Bull kids tough day Hall, Mehmti, Dos Santos no goal contributions
-Sullivan needs minutes Brad’s offensive system is terrible. To be fair DC is trying to grind out 0-0 draws.

    • Luna’s goal was not much since it came from an amazingly bad giveaway from the San Diego goalie. I’m 80 and I could have scored that goal..I’m a Luna fan, but things need to be put in perspective.

      Reply
      • Well he did show nice quickness and soccer iq to get his foot on that incredibly bad decision by Ferree. He was a problem throughout but SD was down Bambino and McVey.

  2. Balogun, 10g in 10 matches has, there ever been an American striker that consistent in a top league over that long of time? Dempsey had 6 in 6 in 2012, but that was a hat trick, a brace and 1 goal game. Jozy probably came close in his 20+ year at AZ. A majority against top of the league clubs 3g against PSG, 1 each against Lens, Marseille, and Lyon.

    • JR,

      How quickly they forget.

1.) If you throw out his first half year at Fulham, Clint averaged about 12 goals, and 42 appearances across all competitions his entire time at Fulham and one season with Spurs.

Clint remains Fulham’s and the USMNT’s all time leading EPL scorer with 50 EPL goals. That is consistency and remains impressive.

2.) Flo is our best dual since JJ. He may well be our most important player at the World Cup. At Monaco he benefits from their offensive attitude. Adi Hütter emphasizes an aggressive, high-pressing style and prioritizes “going on the offensive” regardless of the opponent. They are the most effective team in Ligue 1 at winning the ball back in the “high zone,” leading to frequent scoring opportunities from turnovers. They often utilize 4-2-2-2 or 3-4-2-1, which flood the midfield with “number 10s” to create a 3-on-2 advantage against opposing defenders. Maybe Pochettino has been taking notes.

3.) AZ was not in a top five league

      Reply
      • I know what Clint did in his seasons in England. I just can’t think of a time an American was that consistent scoring 10 in 10. I’m not sure how many have even scored like that in MLS. The most McBride ever had in a season was 12. Pulisic after the Covid shutdown had 8 g+a in 9 matches which might be the closest. Seems like a pretty impressive accomplishment that’s gone relatively unnoticed.

      • JR,

“Seems like a pretty impressive accomplishment that’s gone relatively unnoticed. ”

Actually, in terms of league games it is 8 in row, which is still fucking awesome considering the next guy on that list is Clint with 3 EPL games in a row.

Pepi has a 4 game run but that is in the Eredivisie.
Josef Martinez has the MLS record with, get this, 15 straight.
Petar Musa (naturalized American/Croatian) had 4 in a row for FC Dallas in 2025.
Brian White has 6 goals in 8 matches but not in a row; I just included since IV is a big fan.

The lack of attention is probably because Lige 1, even with Flo, Tessman and Timo there, doesn’t get the kind of coverage here that Serie A, the EPL, La Liga or the BL does.

    • There’s certainly should be no doubt who our #1 striker is. And considering that his goals came against top teams and his goal scoring with the national team, he’s a real money player. The question is if the US team can create chances for him in the WC. Too bad Gio Reyna isn’t as good as his father was.
