Girma, Thompson to meet Coffey in Women’s FA Cup semifinals

There will be an American showdown in the Women’s FA Cup semifinals this May.

Sam Coffey and Manchester City will take on Naomi Girma, Alyssa Thompson and Chelsea for a spot in May 31st’s FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Both Man City and Chelsea advanced to the semifinal round after earning quarterfinal victories on Monday.

Coffey started and played 90 minutes as the Citizens defeated Birmingham City 1-0 away from home. The U.S. women’s national team midfielder has continued to rack up the minutes in England, starting six of her 10 appearances abroad.

Girma and Thompson both went the distance earlier in the day as Chelsea edged London rivals Tottenham 2-1. Girma logged her first 90-minute shift since playing 120 minutes against Manchester United earlier in the competition back on February 22.

The 21-year-old Thompson has started all seven of Chelsea’s matches since the last international break.

Man City and Chelsea will face off on the weekend of May 9th, with the winner taking on either Liverpool or Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup Final.
