Aidan Morris, Middlesbrough fall to Southampton in EFL Championship promotion playoff semifinals

Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough’s dream of making it to Wembley Stadium this season came to a crushing halt on Tuesday night.

Morris started and played 120 minutes but Kim Hellberg’s squad lost 2-1 to Southampton in extra time of the EFL Championship’s promotion playoff semifinals. The two teams played out a goal-less first leg in Middlesbrough on Saturday before the host Saints used a late winning goal from Shea Charles to seal their spot at Wembley on May 24.

Riley McGree struck first for Middlesbrough in the fifth minute, one-timing Callum Britain’s cross into the bottom-left corner. However, it would serve as Boro’s only goal of the night and two-legged series.

Ross Stewart pulled Saints level 1-1 before halftime after finishing off a frantic play in the Middlesbrough box.

Both teams had ample opportunities to grab a winning goal in regulation but extra time would be needed at St. Mary’s Stadium. After falling down early in the match, Southampton would complete its comeback by using a cross-turned-shot from Charles with four minutes to play.

Charles sent a dangerous cross into the Boro box from the right wing, causing Sol Brynn to watch it nestle into the far-left corner. Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry looked set to head away Charles’ cross but was waived off by a teammate, which ultimately ended up being the wrong decision.

Morris went the distance in the defeat for Middlesbrough, making his 44th appearance of the season in all competitions. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder set a new career-high for single-season appearances after missing one month last fall due to an ankle injury.

Hull City will now take on Southampton for the final promotion place in next season’s English Premier League campaign while Middlesbrough sees its promising campaign come to a painful end.
