Joe Scally has spent the last five years at German club Borussia Moenchengladbach and although his current contract still has 12 months to go, the American defender could very well depart this summer.
Scally is preparing for Gladbach’s Bundesliga finale on Saturday, a home date with Hoffenheim at Borussia-Park. The former NYCFC academy player has become a stalwart in the Gladbach backline over the past five seasons, logging 30 or more appearances in four of those campaigns.
Gladbach rebounded from a worrying first half of the season to seal league safety earlier this spring, giving Scally and the rest of Eugen Polanski’s squad a major sigh of relief. Scally played a major role yet again for the club, logging over 2,600 minutes across all competitions, as well as two goals and three assists.
He’s amassed over 160 appearances for Gladbach, becoming one of the more consistent fullbacks in the Bundesliga. Scally’s also teamed up with close friend and USMNT teammate Gio Reyna in Germany this season, giving him some extra familiarity with another member of the squad.
While Scally has enjoyed his time at Gladbach, the veteran defender admitted that he could look for a move elsewhere to experience something new in his career.
“I’ve been here for a long time,” Scally said in a conference call Tuesday with reporters. “I love the club, but it’s no secret that I would love to experience something different at some point in my career. I think every player has their wishes and what they want to do.
“It will be an exciting summer with the World Cup, and that’s where my focus is at now. And then we’ll see after that,” he added.
Scally will aim to stay injury-free in Gladbach’s final match on Saturday before earning a USMNT call-up to Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup roster later this month.
