Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Balogun, Pepi, and more

AS Monaco’s quest to return to the UEFA Champions League next season took a major boost on Saturday.

Folarin Balogun scored his 19th goal of the season in all competitions, helping kickstart a 2-1 comeback victory over Metz. The U.S. men’s national team forward has now scored four goals in his last five appearances and 12 goals in 2026, continuing to be a major player in Sebastian Pocagnoli’s squad.

After Metz grabbed a 1-0 lead right after halftime, Balogun responded with a confident finish in the 61st minute. Balogun received an upfield pass from Maghnes Akilouche before drilling a right-footed shot into the far corner of the net.

Monaco would complete the comeback in second-half stoppage time as Ansu Fati’s winner gave the visitors a crucial three points. Balogun played the full 90 minutes while Monaco jumped into sixth place and four points back of the final automatic spot for next season’s Champions League competition.

Up next for Balogun and Monaco is a home date with Lille on May 10.

In England, Antonee Robinson started in Fulham’s road loss to Arsenal. Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough drew at Wrexham, officially clinching their promotion playoff spot. Sam Coffey and Manchester City moved one step closer to lifting the WSL title.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic came off the bench in AC Milan’s loss to Sassuolo. Weston McKennie and Juventus were left frustrated after a draw against relegation-threatened Hellas Verona. Gianluca Busio helped Venezia earn automatic promotion back to Serie A.

In Spain, Alex Freeman retained his starting spot in Villarreal’s home win over Levante.

In Germany, Kristoffer Lund assisted once in FC Koln’s draw with Union Berlin. Mael Corboz went the distance in Arminia Bielefeld’s against Bochum.

  1. Johnnyrazor,

“Pulisic has been poor” what else do you want?”

For you to stop making excuses for Pulisic’s current poor run of form, yet you continue to make excuses and spread the blame around to others…

e.g. …” If it wasn’t for Pulisic’s strong run of form early on they wouldn’t be in a CL spot at all, so let’s be honest it’s also Gimenez, Nkunku, Leao, Fullkrug, Salaemaekers, fault too. And let’s not forget Zlatan and the rest of the front office who can’t seem to find any attacking help for Leao and Pulisic and of course Allegri whose tactics only win titles when he has the best players.”

Pulisic’s shitty run of form is on no one else, but 100% on Pulisic.

The last time Pulisic scored for Milan he was playing in a 3-5-2 formation as one of the two forwards.

Since then, he has gone ice cold and played like shit, so it’s not on the formation, his forward running partner, not playing with a striker, his teammates, Tomori getting a stupid second yellow, and a corresponding red card, Allegri, Allegri’s tactics, Allegri’s terrorist soccer, Tare, Ibra, or Redbird Capital…it’s on Pulisic, and Pulisic only.

Stop making excuses for Pulisic and hold him accountable.

If you’re not going to do so for this topic, I’m going to continue blasting holes in your posts…and I’m going to do it for fun. 😊

I’ve held off multiple times now from saying this, but if you are not going to be objective about Cavan or Christian, do yourself a favor, and update your handle to…CavanSullivanFanBoy…or…ChristianPulisicFanBoy….or…just, FanBoy.

    • Papi: it’s a team game, Pulisic has been bad, he’s primarily at fault for his poor play. However, if all your star players are underperforming the Coach is also at fault. If my four boys are playing soccer in the house and they break a picture frame should I only hold the one who kicked it accountable? Or do all get punished for doing something they all knew was against family rules. You can hold all the players on the team accountable for the failures and the coaches, and the front office. It doesn’t mean you aren’t holding the one player accountable. And honestly Pulisic couldn’t give two craps if you or I hold him accountable that’s not your or my job and it’s for darn sure not healthy for any player to be listening to fans on a message board.
      —————————
Please review my comments about Pulisic, constantly pointing out how selfish and tries to play hero. He does not combine well with Jedi, and he wines to the officials too much. Others on here blame Leao for not passing more or taking hopeless shots, you won’t see that from me. Just as I defended Dembele when posters blamed him for CPs Dortmund struggles.
      —————————
What did I say when Sullivan had a couple good performances in CL against a minnow from the Caribbean? Slow down, the opponent was terrible don’t get overly excited. Sullivan has not produced, neither has anyone else on Philadelphia. When everyone doesn’t produce, it’s the managers fault.

  2. I got a new internet/TV cable provider and have access to more European games. I thought McKenzie looked good, Given that Trusty looked good in our last friendlies, we have potentially 3 good CB’s, plus Ream as backup. With Dest and Robinson, we can easily go to a 3-5-2. I’m not worried about Robinson. I had thought that Balogun had been picked up by Monaco since he has been there 3 seasons, but the match announcer said he was on loan from Arsenal.
I will be surprised if they don’t bring Balogun back into the fold, giving him a chance to play on one of the top- European teams. Even if he stays at Monaco, it looks likely he will play in the Champions League next season. I saw Athletico’s match this weekend and was impressed with the speed of play there and the ball skills on display. From what I saw, I’d rate La Liga ahead of Serie A. I think we have enough quality players in top leagues, that I’m optimistic about the national team’s future. I’ve been following the national team since 1990.

  3. With both Balogun and Pepi scoring goals it may be beneficial to go to a two striker 3-5-2 for the WC. With a #10 underneath and two Dm’s.

  4. Worried about Antonee Robinson and Christian Pulisic. Both did not perform well this weekend. I am at disbelief these two are the ones hit with the out of form bug. Hopefully things will turn around for them both.

    • Well Pulisic didn’t come on until after they were down a man and Jedi was facing Saka which is an uphill battle for anyone. So let’s cross our fingers for next week.

“Well Pulisic didn’t come on until after they were down a man…”

Call it what it is…Pulisic got benched.

Stop making excuses for Pulisic and hold him accountable.

      • Papi, Allegri finally figured out neither Leao or Pulisic are good when they start up top together. Unfortunately whether that would have worked or not is unknown because Tomori picked up two yellows in 27 minutes. Milan hardly had the ball after that at least CP put one on target which was better than the rest of the team. Pulisic has been poor but I don’t understand why you think he deserves all the blame for Milan’s struggles. Plenty of poor play and management to go around.

      • Johnnyrazor,

I’m not sure why you keep posting false narratives about Pulisic’s current run of bad form at Milan, but you’re going to need to get your facts right, otherwise, I’m going to continue to blast holes in your posts about this topic…and I’m going to do it for fun. 😊

        ————————————————-

“Allegri finally figured out neither Leao or Pulisic are good when they start up top together.”

False. Allegri knows that Leao and Pulisic starting side-by-side as forwards is not ideal, but his strikers…Fullkrug and Gimenez…have not scored / helped, so he is searching for a solution. To date, he has not found a consistent or viable solution, so he continues to tinker.

For context, in the last 90 days, Milan have played 13 Serie A games.

In 6 of those games, Allegri has started Leao and Pulisic side-by-side as forwards and Milan have garnered 10 points, while Leao has scored once in those 6 games.

In the other 7 games, Allegri has sent out another pair of strikers, including Pulisic, and / or played another formation, and Milan have garnered 10 points in those games, while other players / forwards have scored, including Leao and Fullkrug.

Guess who hasn’t scored or provided an assist in those 13 games?

        ———————————————

“Unfortunately whether that would have worked or not is unknown…”

False. We know that Leao and Pulisic “works”…to the tune of 10 points in 6 games…see above…but guess who has not had a goal contribution in that time?

        ——————————————-

“…at least CP put one on target which was better than the rest of the team.”

Pulisic is not at Milan to “put one on target”…he is at Milan to play, play well, and produce. When he was scoring goals earlier this season, everyone, including you, were singing his praises, but now you won’t hold him accountable for not scoring or providing assists? SMH.

        ———————————————

“Pulisic has been poor but I don’t understand why you think he deserves all the blame for Milan’s struggles.”

False. Never once…ever…did I post that Pulisic deserves all the blame for Milan’s struggles. Quite the contrary…you tried to blame things on Allegri by drawing a correlation between his time at Juve and his current time at Milan, all while falsely claiming, “that his forwards don’t score” and “that he is limping towards the finish.”

What I have said…is that Pulisic does not deserve a pass and that he should be held accountable for his current bad run of form at Milan.

If you are going to claim that I put all of Milan’s struggles on Pulisic, refer me to the post where I said that.

        ————————————————

“Plenty of poor play and management to go around.”

I said exactly this last week…Allegri is searching for answers, but his inability to find one is not on him…it is on everyone…ownership, Sporting Director, Allegri, the players, etc.

        ———————————————-

Stop making excuses for Pulisic and hold him accountable.

      • Papi:

“I am at disbelief these two are the ones hit with the out of form bug.”

      They are not machines.

When you play as much as they do and are relied on as much as they are, inevitably you hit a bad patch. At this point, the most important thing is they get to the WC camp somewhat healthy.

” Allegri has essentially destroyed any offense for that team.”

Allegri has been there a year. He finally settled on his 3-5-2 in January.
This tactical shift along with the presence of feckless strikers seems to have kicked off the drop-off. Because Fulkrug and other useless types were crap ( to be fair to Santi he was mostly hurt) , Pulisic and Rafael Leão were forced into central roles.

Allegri’s tactics prioritized “balance” and defensive stability, often leaving Pulisic too far from the goal to be effective. Milan’s overall scoring dropped from two goals per game (early season) to one goal per game by January 2026, even while Pulisic was still on the pitch.

CP’s slump was all the more noticeable since the team had come to rely on him for his consistency.

Once the system stopped producing chances, Pulisic’s individual form plummeted. Allegri has described Pulisic as a “very sensitive man” whose confidence is heavily tied to scoring. Pulisic has now gone 17 straight club games without a goal, matching a career worst. Without a striker to occupy defenders, Pulisic has struggled more with the “physicality of duels” in the box.

SBI seems determined to crucify Pulisic for all of this. Pulisic is not an elite player and one can argue that a truly elite player would adjust to being castrated. Leao, allegedly elite, has not exactly risen above the muck, put Milan on his back and carried them the way Pulisic was previously alleged to have done, has he?

The fact is since he got there CP has been Milan’s leading goal involvement guy.

        since they have been team mates;
Christian Pulisic 36 goals 21 assists
Rafael Leão 29 goals 22 assists

Since January 1, 2026, Rafael Leão has recorded 4 goals and 2 assists.
Since January 1, 2026, Adrien Rabiot has recorded 5 goals and 1 assist.
Since January 1, 2026, Luka Modrić has recorded 1 goal for the club.

Since January 1, 2026, AC Milan has played 17 matches.. All of these matches were within Serie A.

        FOR CONTEXT
A year ago: From January 1, 2025, until May 3, 2025, Christian Pulisic recorded 6 goals and 4 assists in Serie A for AC.

His strike partners during that period were; Santiago Giménez, 3 goals, Luka Jović, 2 goals, Tammy Abraham, 2 goals, Álvaro Morata, 0 goals. Not great stats but by all accounts they were more effective than the current Clownshow strikers.

        So yeah they miss him.

Allegri took his best goal scorer and cut his balls off to install his favored tactical system. Sometimes you sacrifice a player for the good of the overall system and Allegri is a proven winner.

CP better hope that Pochettino does not hold him accountable and cut him from the World Cup team. CP needs the shop window to lobby for a transfer. Milan currently boasts one of the best defenses in Europe. So unless he wants to follow in Griezmann’s footsteps he may want to transfer.

Allegri was aided in castrating CP by a hapless front offfice who can’t find a half assed decent striker. I think Gyasi Zardes is a free agent. Damion Downs is currently on loan at Hamburg so if they want another emotionally fragile USMNT player they could probably get him for cheap from Southampton.

    • Milan is 5 points up on Como, with 3 left to play. Milan plays Atalanta, Genoa and Cagliari. Needs to win 2 of 3 to assure themselves of CL, and that is realistic given the competition. Como plays Verona, Parma and Cremonese; winning all three is not out of the question. Roma, one point behind Como, is still in the picture as well.

      Reply
      • Modric out for the season that’s not going to help. They got up 5 pts from those three first time around when they were playing well. Como has a very favorable schedule but winning 3 in a row isn’t easy. I think realistically AC Milan squeezes in 2 pts ahead of Como, but I don’t see them
staying ahead of Juve. Of course I thought they’d pass them both of the last two weeks.

      • Just noticed I hadn’t seen Roma’s win today. Rosoneri is in trouble, they might end up in Conference League next year, which I guess is an upgrade.

    • Johnnyrazor and ac,

Pointing out Milan’s current inability to score is easy and making Allegri the scapegoat is even easier.

Given Milan’s current roster and their abundance of talent, or lack thereof, what do you two recommend for the solution to what ails them?

      Reply
      • Given what they’ve got they probably should go back to a 4-3-3. Start either one of the CFs doesn’t really seem to matter with Pulisic and Leao in support. Without Modric they’re in trouble anyway. Probably Rabiot, Ricci, and Loftus Cheek in MF, w/ Estupinan Gabbia Pavlovian and the young RB. Is it ideal, no but they can’t score in Max’s preferred situation back and counter. If Max has to have his preferred 3 back that’s fine but go 3-4-2-1 then you could use Salaemakers as RWB and Estupinan as LWB.
        —————-
I’m not blaming this one on Max, Tomori is to blame for the early red card. Your offense has scored 1g in 4 matches you can’t pick up a red 27 minutes in. The problem with Max’s defensive play for a 0-0 draw style is there’s no plan if you go down a goal.

      • Johnnyrazor,

        Interesting suggestion.

Allegri’s preference for defensive play is a reflection of what he has to work with…and that is a shitty lot of players on the Milan roster, which includes Fullkrug, Gimenez, Leao, and Pulisic, not scoring…you know, the players that are expected to score.

Allegri is doing his best to eke out points and qualify for Champions League.

      • If it’s not working, try fixing it, even if moving out of his preferred formation. Tweak to the strengths of players. Allegri is a great defensive coach, but if the team is not scoring, and now allowing goals consistently, then there obviously is a problem with the “defensive” system and those players in that system. Of course the front office stinks too, but this is who they chose, along with the players. The players have been stinking as well, but if it’s just rinse and repeat the same thing, move to the strength of players. No easy fix of course, but that’s what a manager is paid for. Right now, they are just trying to save qualifying for Champions League. At the rate they are allowing goals, and not scoring, it’s going to be the same the rest of the season.

      • Papi: that’s Allegri’s strategy at all times. Scratch out 1-0 wins against weak opponents and 0-0 draws against better teams. The problem is the players he has currently aren’t scoring that 1g. They just aren’t producing scoring opportunities or at least not enough that they’re scoring. I could see playing with 5 MF when you had Modric to produce those opportunities. He’s out so rather than put another DM, put on an attacker and try to score. 3 draws isn’t going to be enough. Max used a 3-4-2-1 most of the time at Juventus so it’s not out of his comfort zone. They’ve got to change something 1g in 5 games isn’t going to do it. They’ve been below 1 xG in all but 2 of their last 10 so yes Pulisic isn’t finishing but the team isn’t creating good chances for anybody.
