There will be three U.S. women’s national team players heading to the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final this month.
Lindsay Heaps, Lily Yohannes, and Korbin Shrader all featured on Saturday as Lyon used a 3-1 second leg victory to eliminate reigning champions Arsenal 4-3 on aggregate. Fellow USWNT player Emily Fox logged 90 minutes in the loss for the Gunners, who could not use a first-leg win to their advantage in France.
Wendie Renard’s first-half penalty kick goal paired with Kadidatou Diani’s go-ahead goal made it 2-0 at halftime and 3-2 to Lyon on aggregate.
Alessia Russo continued her stellar tournament by trimming Arsenal’s deficit to 2-1 on the night with 14 minutes to play, but Lyon would have the last laugh in the match.
Jule Brand’s decisive goal in the 86th minute gave Lyon a 4-3 aggregate lead, and one that they wouldn’t let slip away on home soil.
Heaps played 77 minutes while Yohannes played 62 minutes before Shrader replaced her 18-year-old tournament for the final 28 minutes off the bench.
Lyon will now wait to face either Barcelona or Bayern Munich in the tournament final on May 23. Barcelona and Bayern Munich are tied 1-1 on aggregate heading into Sunday’s second leg from Spain.
Jonathan Giraldez’s squad have already sealed the French title this spring and will close its league schedule out on May 6 against Montpellier. Lyon will also face Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe De France Feminine Final on May 10, seeking to complete a domestic double.
