American midfielder Sam Coffey made the move to WSL giants Manchester City in January and has become a league champion only four months later.
Man City officially clinched their second league title on Wednesday following Arsenal’s 1-1 road draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. It marked the Citizens first league crown since 2016 and their first domestic trophy since 2022.
Man City’s title triumph also ended Chelsea’s six-season run as league champions.
Arsenal entered its midweek match needing to win out in its final four to have a chance at leapfrogging Man City into the top spot. However, dropped points against the Seagulls meant that the Gunners are 10 points behind the Citizens with three matches to play.
The 27-year-old Coffey moved to England from NWSL side Portland Thorns in January, ending her close to four years with the club. She has started in seven of her 10 appearances to date, most recently playing the full 90 minutes in Sunday’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Liverpool.
Coffey becomes the fourth U.S. women’s national team player to win the WSL title, joining Catarina Macario, Naomi Girma, and Mia Fishel on that list.
Man City’s quest for a domestic double also remains alive with Andree Jaglertz’s squad traveling to Chelsea in FA Cup semifinal action on Sunday. The Citizens will then conclude their WSL schedule at West Ham United on May 17.
