For the first time since 1996, Luton Town will be playing in the top-flight of English Football.
American goalkeeper Ethan Horvath helped lead the Hatters to a first-ever English Premier League appearance after Luton Town edged Coventry City 6-5 in a penalty shootout on Saturday at Wembley Stadium. The teams were tied 1-1 after 120 minutes of action before Rob Edwards’ squad outlasted Coventry City.
Horvath, a Nottingham Forest loanee, made one save in the victory, earning EPL promotion for the second-consecutive campaign.
Jordan Clark’s 23rd minute opener boosted the Hatters in front 1-0 after Elijah Adebayo’s strong running and clever distribution led to a confident finish from Clark.
However, Coventry’ Gustavo Hamer equalized for Mark Robins’ squad in the 66th minute, scoring for the second-consecutive match.
Both teams tried to earn a winning goal in extra time, but were unable to do so, forcing a penalty shootout. After both Luton and Coventry successfully scored their opening five opportunities, the pressure was on Coventry following Dan Potts’ propelled Luton in front 6-5.
Fankaty Dabo soared his right-footed shot into the stands, sending Luton Town into the top flight and condemning Coventry City back to the Championship for another season.
Horvath finished the season with 20 clean sheets, the second-most in the division behind Coventry’s Ben Wilson. The 27-year-old is set to rejoin Nottingham Forest at the conclusion of his loan, but Edwards has previously expressed his interest in keeping Horvath on a long-term deal.
I wonder if he stays with Lutron Town? Most in form USMNT GK.
They seem to want him but Forest sold Samba and had Navas and Henderson only on loan so who knows.
Now that they are promoted, maybe they can afford Ethan.
My guess is Forest would prefer to go with Navas or Henderson if they can swing those deals. Kaylor still looks pretty good.
V: I would think so unless Forest really loved Horvath’s season. ManU is supposedly moving DeGea so that could slow a Henderson move and Navas is 36. How does a promoted team spend their money is always the question? We know Luton has to put in a lot of money to upgrade the stadium how much are they then willing to pay for players? A lot of off season questions for Americans abroad.
Luton are probably going straight back down but they need the best defense they can put out there and a solid keeper would help.
