New York Red Bulls vs. CD Guadalajara: Your Running Commentary

Red_bulls_logoChivas_logo

Good evening folks. I’ve made my way back from NYC to Jersey and almost forgot about tonight’s friendly between the New York Red Bulls and Chivas de Guadalajara.

The game is being shown on Telefutura so you can watch the Red Bulls field a young squad in a pointless friendly that is essentially a marketing tool for parent company Red Bull.

If you will be watching the match, and will be online, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. I will check in during the game, but can’t do a running commentary (at least not to start the match).

Enjoy the match.

  1. Very good performance from the Red Bulls. They were well organized and put in some hard work on defence. I’m still not completely sold on the effort put forth by Chivas, but the altercation at the end of the 1st half says they were into it more than I first thought.

Gilkerson was interesting to watch, and I’ve come away from this game wanting to see more. Ubiparipovic did very well to set up the goal, can’t say he matched that level throughout the entire match. Still, other than Stammler being sent off, I’m not sure there’s much if anything to complain about from a Red Bull fan’s point of view.

  2. 92nd minute- A free kick from the left side of the field, well out, is cleared by the Red Bulls, and it was the last chance of the match!

    FULL TIME

  3. 87th minute- Zach Thorton with a very good save diving to his right, the 1st time I can recall him being tested tonight.

Schramm comes in for Gilkerson, and I can go to sleep content.

  4. 85th minute- Ricky Schramm is the only Red Bulls outfield player not to play in tonight’ match. I’m rooting for him for the next 5 minutes or so.

  5. Correct my earlier statement. Sassano sucks too! 10 yards of wide open space 1v1 against the goalie, and he finds a way to screw it up.. That afer a couple of horrible 40 yard bombs that don’t come close to the net. I almost wish Reyna was back, almost…

  6. 82nd minute- Sassano found himself on a break with thee keeper to beat, but he took a touch to slow down, allowing a Chivas player to catch up and deflect his shot. Sassano needed to put a shot on goal in that situation.

    Wolyniec comes off for Megaloudis.

  7. Chivas is switching goalkeepers.

79th minute- Chivas was a bit unlucky, as a cross into the area took a deflection off of a teammate a few feet from where it was struck, going out for a goal kick.

  8. Ramon Morales off for Jorge Cardenas. Chivas made another sub along with this, but I have no idea who it was for.

  9. 76th minute- Roth does well holding the ball up, and earns a free kick a few yards from the penalty area on the right side. I thought it was Wolyniec at first. Magee wasted it, hitting it twelve or so rows into the stands.

  10. 65th minute- Mike Magee, already with a yellow, just runs over a Chivas player to concede a free kick, which was caught by Thorton without too much trouble.

Borman is coming out for David Roth.

  11. 62nd minute- esparza found himself with the ball at his feet from just inside the penalty area, though his shot was comfortably wide.

  12. I was a couple of minutes early with the the last game time.

59th minute- Magee gets a yellow. Just before that, Gilkerson left his feet to disposses a Chivas attacker. either these are some very good challenges by the Red Bulls, or the ref is letting quite a bit go.

  13. A coupl of minuts ago Salazar came in for Padilla and Baez came on for Ledezma.

59th minute- Chivas was threatening, but Jeff Parke made a very good sliding challenge on the right side of the area to disposses the streaking Chivas player.

  14. 54th minute- A long ball was played into a Red Bulls player on the top right of the penalty area, who blasted a shot that ended up in the stands. Not sure who it was.

  15. I think Gilkerson looks pretty good. They need a fast defender.

I am surprised he is back out too, after the getting his head knocked around

  16. It’s a friendly, non league game. No suspension will occur. My bet is also that the coaches will agree to have 11 a side after the half (as mentioned its a friendly, it benefits no one to play both teams a man down)…

  17. HALFTIME

A very good half of play by the Red Bulls, who have a deserved 1-0 lead. The scuffle near the end of the half, which saw 1 player a side sent off seems to have woken up Chivas, who looked a little out of sorts all night.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Red Bulls can keep this up. They’ve been pressuring Chivas with a lot of energy, and the 10 v 10 play will only leave more space for the remaining players to cover.

  18. 48th minute- not sure if it was the altercation or not, but the couple of minutes after the injured player were removed from the field were the best minutes of play by Chivas all night.

  19. Gilkerson is walking off the field under his own power, as is Javier Hernandez, the Chivas player involved in the collision.

  20. 44th minute- A Red Bulls and Chivas player are down injured. This has nothing to do with the scuffle, but with the free kick that ensued from it.

  21. 42nd minute- A scuffle has broken out between Chivas and the Red Bulls, and Stammler and a Chivas player are sent off!!! RED CARDS

  22. 37th minute- Chivas with a free kick on the left side of the field from a long way out, which was cleared for a corner. Chivas then proceeded to do nothing with the corner.

  23. 31st minute- Red Bulls earn a corner, which was cleared by Chivas.

I’m still waiting for Chivas to wake up and start playing. It can’t be the Red Bulls play that is making Chivas look poor. I refuse to believe that.

  24. echeverry got behind the defense, and received a great ball which he put past the keeper who was coming out towards him, but he was offsides.

  25. 26th minute- A goal for the Red Bulls was waived off. I can only assume it was offsides, as I don’t speak spanish.

And the replay says that I was right.

  26. Echeverry hit that ball so softly I can’t believe the keeper didn’t stop it. Ubiparapovic is not looking like a fluke. I don’t know what these spanish guys are saying, but they’re sayin his name a lot.

  27. 25th minute- Andrew Boyens did well to poke a crossed ball out of the path of Ramon Morales, who was ready to pounce on it.

  28. Ubiparipovic with a great run into the box coming from the right side. He drew the defense to him, then slid it to echeverry who was in the middle of the box, and he buried the shot to give the Red Bulls a 1-0 lead.

  30. 22nd minute- Hunter Freeman had the ball on the right flank, then slipped the ball to Stammler at the edge of the area, who ripped a shot that went wide.

  31. 19th minute- Echeverry ran onto a ball played along the ground, and took a first time shot from just inside the top right of the penalty area, which went just wide of goal!

  32. 16th minute- Chivas forced a turnover in midfield, ending up with Javier Hernadez looking like he was going to reach a ball on the left flank sent in long, but a verry good sliding tackle by a Red Bull defender broke it up.

    Reply
  33. 14th minute- Red Bulls look organized and have played well so far, though Chivas don’t look too bothered about playing as of yet.

    Reply
  34. 5th minute- echeverry was 1 v 1 with the keeper, with a poor angle coming in on the left to be fair, and he hit a weak shot that hit the keeper but was intercepted by a defender before it reached goal. He needed to do better with that.
