After waiting 17 months, and overcoming an accident that nearly took his life, Charlie Davies returned to first-team professional soccer tonight in storybook fashion.
Davies scored two goals in a D.C. United 3-1 victory against Columbus, and after the match gave this emotional interview:

No, you would have to be worse than that, because even a lot of miserable bastards who hate people like Charlie Davies.
With tears like that, there’s probably a spot for him on the Miami Heat.
The emotion in Charlie’s voice tells you so much more than any sports-cliche you can get out of a thousand interviews. Poignant stuff.

Absolutely fantastic start. Charlie is fortunate to have this opportunity, he knows it, and he seized it. He deserves every bit of praise he gets – truly an amazing story. Plenty of hard work ahead of him this season, and much more to prove. But on this night, it really has to be a dream come true.

The 2nd goal was pure CD9. I am so happy for him, no words… Most people would have given up at so many points along the way, he never lost faith in himself. He is truly special.
