Schalke 5, Inter Milan 2: The Highlights

The Schalker of the season.

Schalke, a much-maligned side domestically, but a very in-form one continentally, tallied five away goals at the San Siro to take a commanding 5-2 lead after the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals over defending-champion Inter on Tuesday.

The hosts' Dejan Stankovic opened the scoring with an early, incredible volley from distance in the first minute, but Edu scored twice, Joel Matip and Raul each scored and Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia provided an own goal to put Schalke in the driver's seat.

Diego Milito supplied Inter's second goal, one that gave the club a 2-1 lead at the time, but Schalke rattled off four straight to put one foot in the semifinals.

Highlights from the match are after the jump:

What did you think of the result? Wish Jermaine Jones hadn't been loaned from Schalke now? Do you think Inter has any shot at coming back in the return leg?

  1. I haven’t watched much of the Bundesliga but I think I am about to start. Schalke was a lot of fun to watch yesterday and have potential to be my favorite German side.

  2. I’m one of the few Schalke supporters that live in the US, and yesterday’s game was incredible. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. Their only hope to get back next year is to win the whole thing, they know that, and they’re playing like they can. Obviously, the dream will end in the semis, but this is a great run!

  3. Inter’s defense was simply horrible. Schalke’s 2nd goal was some of the worst coverage on a corner kick I’ve seen in a long while. However, agree with Taylor that Inter’s first goal was “sick.”

NO WAY Inter goes through though. They’ll have to win by a 4 goal margin at Schalke…not likely.

  4. Nope need 4 goals. If inter wins 3-0 then the score is 5-5 with schalke having 5 away goals to inters 3.

This will be fun to see them try though

  5. Schalke has an Edu (brazil) on their team….hahahah, I almost had a heart attack. MMMMM…maybe they’re cousins or brothers, like the Boatengs?? hahahaha, yeah right…..

  6. It’s results like this that show us the caliber or should I say class of player we have on the USMNT….Jones played and contributed for schalke, got loaned out and is a regular starter and plays an integral part for Blackburn. I think he’s better playing in the EPL.

  7. I think it is pretty close to over. The probability of another such game is incredibly low. You expect Inter to win 4-0 or 5-1 away? All Schalke has to do is make sure they don’t concede 4 goals. Even against the best team in world this is pretty easy given some decent organization.

  8. Scary thing is that this series might be far from over. Inter has enough Fire power to still win this damn tie. Yesterday was a surreal match and I’m looking forward to what I expect to be another bizaare second leg.

  9. Magath was pathetic as a coach. He’s the reason Jones was eventually loaned out. Rangnick is miles ahead of Magath. Schalke is quite lucky to have Rangnick. Big shout out to Hoffenheim for all this wouldn’t be possible if not your dumb management.
