U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Jose Torres has spent nine years with Mexican side Pachuca since moving to Mexico from the United States as a teenager, but it seems like his time with ‘Los Tuzos’ is ready to come to an end.
Reports in Mexico have linked Torres to a move to Mexican side Tigres. The timing of the reports is interesting considering Torres, who turned 25 last week, helped deliver a game-winning assist for Pachuca in a 1-0 victory against Tigres just last week.
If the move does materialize then MLS fans could get a glimpse of Torres with Tigres when the Mexican club faces the Seattle Sounders in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals next year.
What do you think of this development? Think Tigres is a good move for Torres? Disappointed he isn’t lining up a move to Europe? See MLS being a better destination?

Some friends of mine dined at his dad’s restaurant in Longview last month and his dad told them that this move to Tigres was in the works. Apparently is going to get paid $50k/week, I don’t know if that’s just in the season or all year, not sure how that salaries are paid out. Gringo’s dad’s restaurant is called El Mexicano.
his dad doesn’t have a restaurant?…
Mexico is too phyiscally weak to help Torres grow. He has pretty good skill. Can he get better in Mexico? Yes. Does Mexico promote a more technical game? Yes. But since many seem to feel that he is not a number 10, we need him to get better with the speed and physicality of the game.
Say what you want about MLS, but it’s definitely one of the more physical and fast leagues.
When you guys say Europe, where exactly do you see him going? A lower table Portuguese club?
A move to Nottingham Forest? Norway?
How safe is Monterrey?
will torres ever be as great as riquelme?
Should have moved to MLS. He needs to play in another country and be in a new environment to push his career to a higher level.
Hope the change in scenery does him good. Nueva Leon will put him a lot closer to his family in Texas. I imagine he and Johnny B. will become fast friends if they aren’t already.
Im happy for him too for the same reasons. He’s still young and can always experiment with europe later on. Hopefully he finds playing time at Tigres. Does anyone know what the depth chart for the Tigres midfield look like?
I guess he didn’t want to play in Champions League for very long next year.
I find it interesting that there’s still a “jury is out” opinion of Torres.
I can’t help but wonder if that has to do with the fact that he not really having gotten to play in his “natural position” yet? Williams was in a similar position until he got to play in his club role, then it was a very clear cut case of where he belonged.
So, if the issue is indeed that he has not had a chance to play in his club position for NATS yet, what’s keeping that from happening? is it a depth issue, a tactics issue?
I appreciate the info anyone can offer. He just seems under-utilized to me thus far.
I’ve always been a big fan of Torres, but I’ll be the first to admit he has not been effective for the Nats. At the same time, he has often deployed out of position. I just don’t see how we get him on the field when he essentially plays Bradley’s role. ?
——Torres—Bradley
———–Williams
You’d have to rely on the outside backs to provide the width because the forwards we’ve been playing aren’t as effective out wide. Maybe a 4-1-2-1-2?
——Johnson—Gomez
———–Dempsey
as a mid field sub to protect a lead and kill the game. His skills scream out for that type of use on the Nats seems to me
Torres is a ding bat. Should have played for mexico…. oh yeah thats right he couldn’t because he is not good enough. USA takes all the dingbats that aren’t good enough to make their countries NT
?????? the hell he was born in Texas you moron
+1
East Texas – Longview – If he were White he’d probably be a slack-jawed yokel and we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. Glad we have Gringo on our side…wish we had some pacey, hi-endurance, wingers to connect with his passes.
…odd
someone was clearly itching to use the word dingbat…
This is the first time i’ve seen u post. I think its funny the first thing u feel comfortable saying its just plain hate with no real logic behind it. You must be a disturbed child
Don’t feed the trolls, guys.
Actually, he had an option of playing for mexico or USA. and chose the USA
As long as when I tune in to the game on Spanish television, the announcers refers to him as “Cap-i-tAn____ Grringo!!!”
He probably needed to go to Europe. Perhaps the lower division of Spain. I feel like Italy would be great for him because of his similar playing style to Andrea Pirlo.
A lower division in Spain would fit well. I also think Holland would work well for him too–at least it would help speed up his thinking. Torres definitely has skills, but it would be nice to see him try the next step and improve his soccer mind.
lateral move in the standings… but champions league is good.
would love to see him move to Houston or Dallas.
Obviously would love to have him in MLS, but I trust the kid knows what is best for him. He certainly seems to have his head on straight.
I’d also be interested to see how Torres could do in MLS. How well his game might translate.
Hopefully this means a new chance to establish himself as a first choice player… Glad he didn’t try and force a move to Europe just to fall into the abyss. Playing consistently in Mexico is perfectly adequate to improve his game and give him a boost back into the picture with the Nats.
I like Torres, I just think he is played in the wrong position, he is not a attacking player, he is a great link up player. Plus he needs bulk up a bit, he gets knocked off the ball too easily in international play. He has lots of potential.
Agreed about his position. We’ve never played him in a system that gets the best out of him.
But I do think he should make the leap to Spain. Mexico will raise his skill level slightly, but he needs to be challenged to develop. I’m not sure this raises his game enough to land him back on the starting roster.
