Chris Pontius’ move to the Philadelphia Union is now complete.

The Union announced Monday that the club has acquired Pontius from D.C. United in exchange for both General and Targeted Allocation Money. With the deal, which was originally reported by Goal USA last week, Pontius’ seven-year tenure with D.C. United comes to an end as the club parts ways with its longest-tenured player.

“We believe Chris is an excellent addition to our first team and organization,” Union technical director Chris Albright said. “His ability, experience and winning mentality will help lead our club in the right direction in 2016.”

In total, Pontius has scored 31 goals and added 17 assists since being selected seventh overall in the 2009 MLS Draft. Hampered by injuries in recent seasons, Pontius’ best season came in 2012, a year that saw him selected to the MLS All-Star Game and MLS Best XI.

Here’s a closer look at the rest of Monday’s MLS news and notes:

D.C. UNITED ACQUIRE NEAGLE FROM SOUNDERS

While the club did part ways with Pontius, D.C. United made swift work in bringing in a new face to play out wide.

D.C. United announced on Monday that the club has acquired Lamar Neagle from the Seattle Sounders in exchange for general allocation money and targeted allocation money.

“Lamar is a talented player whose speed and versatility will allow us to create a more dynamic attack,” said Dave Kasper, D.C. United General Manager and Vice President of Soccer Operations. “His workrate is top notch and we are very excited to welcome him to our club.”

The 28-year-old winger played 31 matches for the Sounders in 2015, scoring four goals and contributing two assists.

Meanwhile, the club also revealed that the options of  Jairo Arrieta and Michael Farfan were declined, while Facundo Coria was waived. Finally, Andrew Dykstra and Perry Kitchen are both of out of contract but the club says the two remain in negotiations.

MLS CUP SEES DECLINE IN RATINGS

It was always going to be hard to top its predecessor, but the 2015 MLS Cup saw a significant decrease in television ratings.

Sports Business Daily reported Monday that the 2015 MLS Cup registered a 0.3 overnight rating, which represents a 50 percent drop-off from the year prior. However, online viewing app Watch ESPN did see more viewers than any other prior championship game.

The rating drop can be attributed to the performance of the previous year’s final, which featured Landon Donovan’s last game prior to retirement.

CREW EXERCISE OPTIONS ON 11 PLAYERS

Following Sunday’s MLS Cup defeat, the Columbus Crew made sure to keep a majority of their roster together heading into 2016.

The Crew announced Monday that the club has exercised options on 11 players, while 10 others were already under contract for next season. The club picked-up the options of goalkeeper Brad Stuver, defenders Harrison Afful, Chad Barson, Sergio Campbell, Waylon Francis, Chris Klute and Michael Parkhurst, as well as midfielders Romain Gall, Hector Jimenez, Justin Meram and Wil Trapp.

“2016 preparations are underway and our aim is to keep the core group of the team together while being in position to make additional roster improvements for next season,” said Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “While decisions to part with players are never easy, we’d like to thank all the players for their contributions throughout the year.”

The club has also declined the contract options of defender Emanuel Pogatetz and midfielder Kristinn Steindorsson, while Ben Speas and Matt Lampson are out of contract.

Kevan George, Jack McInerney and Aaron Schoenfeld are currently out of contract, but remain in discussions with the club.

RICKETTS, BUDDLE AMONG OPTIONS DECLINED BY GALAXY

It appears that the LA Galaxy will have a new starting goalkeeper in 2016.

The Galaxy announced Monday that the club has declined options on Donovan Ricketts, Edson Buddle, Tommy Meyer, Brian Perk, Charlie Rugg, Mika Vayrynen, Kenney Walker and Andrew Wolverton.

Forward Alan Gordon is also out of contract with the club.

With the moves the Galaxy roster as it stands is as follows: A.J. DeLaGarza, Giovani dos Santos, Rafael Garcia, Dan Gargan, Steven Gerrard, Juninho, Omar Gonzalez, Baggio Husidic, Bradford Jamieson IV, Robbie Keane, Leonardo, Sebastian Lletget, Ignacio Maganto, Raul Mendiola, Robbie Rogers, Dave Romney, Brian Rowe, Oscar Sorto, Jose Villarreal, Gyasi Zardes.

  1. Both Portland and Columbus are small market teams which do not draw a lot of interest outside of their home fan base. We see the same thing when a World Series lacks a big name team.

  2. “Ratings suffer significant decline?”

Not surprising when the product is bland, parity is encouraged and the league lacks any character or soul. Having a meaningless season doesn’t help, either.

    Not good, Garber. Not good.
