If Berhalter watched this game, he has to realize he has a defensive midfielder in Sands. Sands barely put a foot wrong and consistently stopped Portland’s advances. His passing was accurate and was intended to push forward or to relieve pressure, as the conditions dictated.
GB must be relieved he has a player who would be an upgrade to Acosta for those times Adams is not available. I know some want a more aggressive tackler like Jones was in that position, but I think he would fit seamlessly into the USMNT as a DM. I suppose a remaining question is if he can handle the faster speed-of-play demanded of an international midfielder.
