Kevin Paredes diagnosed with thigh strain

Kevin Paredes’ role with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg has continued to increase the spring, but the American could face a short spell on the sidelines following a recent injury.

Paredes was diagnosed with a thigh strain following his second-half substitution in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. The 19-year-old was called on by manager Niko Kovac early in the second half at the Volkswagen Arena, but was forced off after 26 minutes due to his injury.

Despite the injury worry ahead of a hopeful summer involvement with the U.S. Under-20 men’s national team, Paredes isn’t expected to miss much time.

“After grabbing his thigh, he played on for a few more minutes,” said Kovac postmatch. “It’s not possible with a torn muscle fiber. He’s definitely got a slight strain there and I’m confident that we’ll fix that in the next ten days.”

Paredes has made 21 appearances this season in all competitions, scoring one goal and adding three assists in Bundesliga play. The midfielder/fullback has continued to develop with Wolfsburg this season, making 12 of his league 19 appearances during the second-half of the club’s schedule.

Wolfsburg remains in the hunt for a top-six finish in the Bundesliga, sitting only four points back of Leverkusen for the final European qualification spot.

Paredes did not feature for the USMNT U-20’s during last summer Concacaf U-20 Championship, but is eligible for Mikey Varas’ squad ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina this June. He scored twice in a 4-2 friendly loss to England in March and remains one of the top attacking talents in the player pool.

The USMNT U-20’s will find out its group stage opponents on April 21.
