Reggie Cannon continued as a first team regular for Portuguese club Boavista this past season, but will reportedly be moving on after not being paid wages by the top-flight side.
Cannon is currently a free agent after leaving Boavista on Thursday, CBS Sports among other outlets reported. The U.S. men’s national team defender is now free to sign with any club this summer despite Boavista president Vitor Murta’s recent comments stating that Cannon has been paid.
“For those who said in a very recent interview that they wanted [Cannon] to be Boavista captain next season, I am very surprised by this news, but it is a player’s decision, which will now have to prove in court,” Murta said in an interview, transcribed by A Bola. “Boavista has its salaries up to date and is completely calm about this matter.”
Cannon, 24, recently completed his third season with Boavista, whom avoided relegation during the Primeira Liga campaign. The former FC Dallas homegrown right back featured as both a fullback and centerback for Petit’s squad this past season, logging 32 combined appearances in all competitions.
In total, Cannon has scored one goal in 88 combined appearances for the Portuguese top-flight side. Turkish club Trabzonspor has previously been linked with Cannon’s services.
Cannon has also earned 28 caps to date with the U.S. men’s national team, being a part of the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup-winning squads in 2021.
I continue to be amazed at reports that players at big European professional leagues go unpaid. I recall hearing about bags of cash delivered to players in Mexico. I can understand it at lower division leagues, but at the premier league levels it is just astonishing to me.
It would be great for him to head to Italy (Defense 1st league) or France (Defend and Counter league). I’d like to think that he can raise his game another level.
Rumors so far are Turkey. But it’s early and he’d be a free transfer so who knows.
Agree would be Great for him if he could land in one of those leagues. I just don’t think he will. I honestly think he may end up in Belgium, which isn’t bad but as we’ve seen it isn’t enough to get him back into the USMNT picture.
