Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Balogun, Trusty, and more

AS Monaco continued its impressive run of form on Sunday with Folarin Balogun ending his scoring drought for the club.

Balogun netted his first goal since March as Monaco defeated visiting Le Havre 3-1 in Ligue 1 play. The U.S. men’s national team forward started and played 90 minutes, helping close out a third-straight victory for the club across all competitions.

Jordan Teze and Daler Kuzyaev traded goals in the first half before Monaco snatched a 2-1 lead after the hour mark. Eliesse Ben Seghir’s long-range finish propelled Adolf Hutter’s squad in front before Balogun iced the result with a confident right-footed strike.

The 23-year-old Balogun contributed nine goals for Monaco in his first season with the club and now is off the mark in the 2024-25 campaign. AS Monaco will aim to extend its unbeaten run to seven matches when Montpellier comes to town on September 28.

  1. Pochettinno’s challenge with the USMNT will be in identifying a strong defence.

Headlines are made by forwards and midfiielders scoring goals and making assists. So we all notice the likes of Pulisic, Tillman, Hagi, Balogen, Weah, McKennie, Reyna, Pepi, Sargent, Aaronson, etc. so casting a wider net is maybe not so important.

How do you compare defenders, especially when it takes multiple games playing against top competition to see which are really up to it? We do notice some wingbacks like Dest and Robinson for their attacking or the occassional CB for scoring off set pieces, but we hear less of their defending. Ream got a lot of attention, mostly because he is remarkable for his age, other than that Trusty, CCV and Richards get occasional notice, but rarely are the potential backs held to task for their blunders, Similarly for keepers who can get noticed for a good mult-save game, but their blunders are either not reported or are “forgiven”.

I think USMNT’s success or lack of it will come more from identifying a back line, whether is is a 3 or 4 man line, and the defensive mids.

In international soccer you simply cannot afford defensive mistakes. Once an opponent goes up a couple goals they will likely setup to defend deep which is hard to penetrate and makes for counters against defenders who are now forced to take more risks.

Relying on outscoring the opposition when you have a mistake-prone defense is simply a recipe for disaster.

    • Dennis- Anrie Chase: He’s become a regular with Stuttgart. Japan cap tied Suzuki pretty early and are likely keen to do the same with Chase. Pochettino’s reputation certainly could be an advantage and Chase never played in J League sighting the hierarchical culture of the league. Maybe those comments were taken out of context or perhaps he isn’t always comfortable with Japanese societal norms having lived in the US for much of his childhood.

That’s not true. Ream is the only US center back who can consistently move the ball out of the back. He’s also the best reader of the game. That’s why he has been the boss of that defense the last few years. I doubt you can name another USMNT center back that doesn’t treat the ball on the ground like it is made of plutonium.
Most of SBI dislike him because he’s old, savvy and slow.
What’s the key to good defense? As you say, not making mistakes.
Which means that sometimes, old, savvy and slow is preferable to young, stupid and fast.

“Similarly for keepers who can get noticed for a good mult-save game, but their blunders are either not reported or are “forgiven”.

There is this misconception that the most important quality of a keeper is their shot stopping ability.
      This is a myth.
Matt, Zack and Ethan have pulled off some outrageous saves. But all three have also committed some horrendous blunders. In American terms it is very easy to undo your TD production with one badly timed interception. Turner became the #1 because he consistently had the least mistakes. Lately, as his confidence has evaporated so has his entire game. The most important thing a keeper can do is provide the team with a consistently high level of mistake free performance( shot stopping, commanding the box, organizing the defense, providing at least acceptable distribution, etc.) because more than anything else, it is mistakes that kill defenses

    • Still a lot of congestion for Cole with first team at Dortmund behind Bynoe-Gittans, Adeyemi, Duranville, along with Sabitzer, Reyna, Malen also being able to play as wide attackers. Probably safe to say he’s too good to be released for U20 WC though.

      • V: I mean why not did Weah score against Allemania Aachen this weekend. Obviously, Cole is better because he did. (Clearly joking) He is pretty good though, was easily our best player for U20s in friendlies last March.

If you remember around the time you first mentioned Campbell, I said it would be ironic if he kept Gio out of the BVB lineup.
How weird it would be if the kid that IV takes full credit for discovering keeps his fave Gio out of the BVB lineup.

      • V: that would be interesting. So far BvB has been playing Campbell as a RW primarily. Gio seems to be favored as a 10, so probably not going to happen. Although they started Sabitzer as a RW last week so maybe Gio could play RW if they are looking for craft not wide pace.
        – I did actually say I’d have given Campbell a shot last window because it was going to be such a mess anyway and Weah and Paredes injured.

      • JR,

I don’t have a problem with capping Campbell right now. He can be the new Eddie Gaven.

I also don’t have a problem letting him alone to develop at BVB, a place, that is known for doing a great job with young attackers. If Campbell proves to be more precocious than we’ve seen, then he will FORCE his way into the picture. That’s how it should be.

In the meantime, there are more than a few attackers who now have a chance to show that all they needed was a fresh start.

    • Bizzy, were you watching was it Sabbi’s pace or Monaco just letting off the gas with a 2g lead. In your video announcers said they changed formation at that point too, Sabbi coming on for a CB. Legitimate question not trolling.

      • They 100% changed the tempo and pace of the. His pace, passing……he looked dynamic (but so were the other West African midfielders)
