Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah got to savor their first trophy lift together with AC Milan on Monday night in Saudi Arabia.
Pulisic started and scored once while Musah played 77 minutes as AC Milan rallied to defeat rivals Inter 3-2 in the Italian Super Cup Final. It is the first joint trophy for the U.S. men’s national team duo since they moved to the Rossoneri.
”It’s amazing to win a trophy, my first with AC Milan, Pulisic said postmatch. “Not just to win it, but to do so in the way we did was great.
”We’ve worked really hard over the last few days This is what we have taken on, you saw it on the pitch, the way we’ve changed in both of the games.”
Sergio Conceicao’s squad had to rally in the second half though to pick up the victory.
Lautaro Martinez broke the deadlock for Inter in first-half stoppage time before Mehdi Taremi extended their lead two minutes into the second half.
Theo Hernandez’s direct free kick cut AC Milan’s deficit in half after 52 minutes before Pulisic tied the match with 10 minutes to go.
Hernandez’s cross from the left wing was gathered by Pulisic in the box before the USMNT star drilled a low shot into the bottom-right corner.
It marked back-to-back goalscoring performances for Pulisic.
”I took [the goal] well with my left foot,” Pulisic said. I’m thrilled to have scored and that we won it in the end.”
Tammy Abraham delivered the winning goal for the Rossoneri in the 93rd minute, giving AC Milan its first trophy since the 2021-22 Serie A title.
It marked Pulisic’s fifth trophy win at club level and Musah’s first.
AC Milan resumes league play on Saturday against Cagliari, seeking a surge up the table.
”We’ll also try and take confidence from winning this title onwards and we’ll celebrate properly,” Pulisic said.
Nice picture, so happy for both of them!
See if you find the clip of Conceicao and Musah hugging after the match. It would fit under the “find someone who looks at you like …” trend. They look very happy with each other.
Musah somewhat under the radar stringing together some really good games, doing the work vs tough teams in multiple roles. Doing that for hardware out of the gates is not bad way to ingratiate yourself with your new manager.
Once again CP proving he’s a big match player. It was a complete performance by him. He did so much tracking back to defend the entire game, but still able to create and score a superb goal with his left foot deep in the second half. To top it off, the pass to Leao to set up the winner was simply sublime. Yeah, Guardian, he’s only 95th in the world.
Remarkable that he is the player on the field who covered the most ground in the last 2 matches to win the cup. rare to see such a dynamic offensive player put in that kind of work. How Conceicao not gonna love that?
You nailed it. I’m not sure how sustainable it will be over time but what he’s doing right now is special from a physical and mental stand point. To have that level of sharpness late in the game after putting in such a shift is just remarkable. Shows how hungry he is to prove to everyone in Italy that he’s the real deal. Bravo!
Although Pulisic didn’t get the assist, on the winning goal it was a great pass by him from the top of the box that set up the winning goal. He had a pretty good game up to his goal and then the goal and set up pass made it an excellent performance. He is getting pretty close to world class right now.
Fun game to watch. Congrats to the Pulisic and Musah.
