Malik Tillman sidelined for “a long time” with ankle injury

PSV has relied heavily on Malik Tillman’s goalscoring and playmaking abilities again this season but will have to look elsewhere for the foreseeable future.

Tillman missed PSV’s 3-1 Eredivisie loss to PEC Zwolle on Saturday due to an ankle injury, manager Peter Bosz confirmed postmatch today. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder suffered the injury midweek as PSV rallied to defeat Excelsior 5-4 after extra time in KNVB Cup play.

Bosz did not confirm an exact timeframe on Tillman’s absence from action, but is planning for the next slate of matches without him.

“We don’t know exactly yet, that will be investigated in the coming period,” Bosz said to ESPN postmatch. “He sustained an ankle injury when he scored against Excelsior. “Malik did play [Tuesday’s] match, but after that he had so much trouble…it doesn’t look good. He’s already had an MRI scan and is still being examined. Will we lose him for a long time? Yes.”

Tillman. 22, made the permanent move to Eindhoven last summer following an impactful season-long loan spell from Bayern Munich. He’s remained a consistent performer in Bosz’s squad this season, tallying 11 goals and four assists in 26 appearances, helping PSV to first place in the Eredivisie and a potential spot in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage.

However, Tillman’s absence would leave a major hole in PSV’s midfield going forward, as well as for the USMNT ahead of the March CONCACAF Nations League window.

PSV sits four points clear of Ajax in the Eredivisie table and next faces Red Star Belgrade in UCL play this coming week.

    • There’s no one that can create in the middle of the field without Tillman. Til isn’t going to break down a low block so it was just hopeful cross after hopeful cross. Not many were all that dangerous either. Draw the FBs up and then hit them in transition. PSV was also terrible defending set pieces, winning second balls and clearing their lines. They’ve given up 12g in their 3 matches in January. The missed penalty kills because PSV had just scored and then have the penalty. They could have seized the match at that point but DeJong was far from the only problem. Flamingo was the only player that went all 120 midweek that started today so Pepi was never going to start this one. DeJong was laboring the last 20 minutes but since Bosz has refused to try to develop a 3rd striker there was literally no one on the bench after Pepi came on. Pepi should start the CL match Tuesday based on their rotation.
