Brenden Aaronson scores in Leeds United rout

Leeds United look in prime position to earn automatic promotion back to the English Premier League and Brenden Aaronson has been a major reason for the club’s success this season.

Aaronson scored the opening goal on Saturday as Daniel Farke’s men rolled to a 7-0 EFL Championship victory over Cardiff City. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder took his goal tally to eight on the season, which is a new career-high for Aaronson in a single campaign.

Daniel James sprung Aaronson for Leeds’ opening goal in the sixth minute before the 24-year-old slotted home down the middle of the Cardiff net.

Manor Solomon extended Leeds’ lead in the 13th minute, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

The league-leaders continued to roll in the second half, netting five additional times. James, Wilfried Gnonto, and Mateo Joseph all added goals of their own while Joel Piroe registered a second-half brace.

Aaronson logged 71 minutes in the match, drawing four fouls, winning six duels, and creating two offensive chances.

His eight goals scored his season are the most for Aaronson since he totaled seven with Red Bull Salzburg during the 2020-21 campaign.

Leeds United sits first in the league standings, two points clear of second place Sheffield United, and five points clear of the promotion playoff places.

A busy February schedule sees Leeds United facing Coventry City, Watford, Sunderland, and Sheffield United in league play.
