Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Cowell, Bello, and more

Saturday’s Liga MX action featured a seven-goal thriller from Guadalajara with Cade Cowell getting off the mark for Chivas.

Cowell scored his first goal of the new Apertura campaign as Chivas defeated visiting Atletico San Luis 4-3. The U.S. men’s national team attacker logged 54 minutes in the match.

After a Juan Sanabria own goal propelled Chivas in front 1-0, Cowell doubled the hosts lead before halftime. Cowell’s header from close range nestled into the back of the net for a 2-0 Chivas advantage.

Despite seeing their 2-0 lead slip away, Chivas used a late brace from substitute forward Armando Gonzalez to snatch a 4-3 victory.

Cowell, who scored nine goals last season for Chivas, is off the mark in the early stages of the new campaign.

Chivas will now turn its attention towards its Leagues Cup opener against New York Red Bulls on Friday.

Elsewhere in Mexico, Alex Zendejas featured off of the bench as Club America tied Necaxa 1-1.

In Belgium, Bryan Reynolds and Westerlo suffered a hammering loss at Anderlecht. Marlon Fossey and Standard Liege picked up three points in their season opener.

  1. With Liverpool trying to buy Isak what’s your over under Newcastle goes after Sargent? If Newcastle sells Isak. Not a whole lot of producing strikers in world football right now who aren’t already have a team.

    • Based on various reports, Newcastle is considering a number of options to replace Isak:

      1. Benjamin Šeško: The RB Leipzig striker is reportedly top of Newcastle’s shortlist. Šeško, at 22, is considered a highly promising young striker who scored 21 goals in 45 appearances for Leipzig last season.

      2. Yoane Wissa: The Brentford forward is another player on Newcastle’s radar. Brentford is reportedly demanding at least £40 million for Wissa, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season. (Newcastle had a £25 million bid rejected and may need to increase their offer significantly).

      2. Nicolas Jackson: Newcastle are also considering a move for the Chelsea striker, particularly if a deal for Wissa proves difficult. Jackson, while not as prolific as Isak or Šeško, offers Premier League experience and could be available for around £65 million.

Just for the record ISAK IS NOT WORTH THE ASKING PRICE OF $150,000,000 LOL 🤣

  2. Cavan Sullivan come on as a sub for Mancheatee City U21’s and scored the loan goal. Keep it up kid. I wonder which US youth team he plays for the WC this fall. U20’s or U17’s?

    • I would be really surprised if he moved up to U20s. Of course who is and is not released will play a role. There are a lot of AM/W options that have played with the U20s this cycle. Cavan has only been with the U17s.

I’m a little worried about San Diego. They’ve got potentially 4 U20 players on their roster if they don’t release right before the playoffs… Soma, Bambino, Verhoeven, and D Vazquez (supposedly coming on loan from Philly).

      • Forgot Aidan Harangi also now with San Diego. I think Mikey wishes he was coaching this years U20 WC.

      • The Harangi loan may be for when Bombinos loan from LAFC is up. I could see San Diego continuing Harangis loan through next summer.

      • i actually like SDFC’s strategy. you have a bunch of rotting U20 YNT type talent in this league. he is very familiar with the names and their qualities to scout which ones to bring over. and then SDFC gets most of them on the field.

as a sports writer put it, it’s kind of like SDFC having a very good academy without yet having one. is this a one-off from that particular team and wha varas knows? we shall see.

in terms of “worries,” you’re losing the big picture. so we lose them for some U20 tournament maybe. unlike many contemporaries, eg my favorite campbell, THEY ARE GETTING ON THE FIELD FOR THEIR CLUB. that will give this marginal set some career traction. that may help their adult quality. that may help some fight for NT spots.

they are already known from the U17s and other U20 events. that serves most of the purpose of the YNT system, if you see the most important purpose as identification and beginning tot shape the players into pros. i think that’s more important than they are all available for u20 worlds or the olympics.

vazquez has sticky feet and it would be good to see if he can mature into a full adult player who can add something. it wasn’t happening in philly.

    • historically what they have tended to do with the wunderkinds is they play U17 then skip to the senior team. pulisic and reyna never played a U20 game. if you see the point of the age group teams as scouting and developing potential senior national team players, then if a 16, 17, 18 year old is ready, and could outplay someone for a roster spot, the system has served its purpose, and you call them to the senior team.

nothing says that an unsuccessful U17->NT guy can’t be sent back down to U20. but IMO if they can make the jump then they need the adult level coaching and sending them to U20 is cynical trophy chasing, or sometimes reflects overly conservative senior team roster policies.

      • There aren’t really wunderkinds in this group. Campbell and Banks are probably out of the WC. We still need to see where Banks stacks in their rotation once real matches start. Vazquez had a really great game against an epically bad Jamaican team and then did little the rest of the tourney. He’s been with the U19s of late in camps. His Union II numbers don’t scream he’s ready to skip age levels ahead. Bambino and Verhoeven have been solid for SD but not outstanding. They stand out because they’re teenagers, not because they excel above the league average. Peyton Miller is probably the next closest after Cole and Noahkai, but again he’s not at Arfsten and Tolkin level let alone Jedi.
        – Kochen I’m not including in this because keeper is a different animal. He needs games somewhere.

    • Was surprised he was left off the Gold Cup team. He is having a very good season. I do believe Poch could have bolstered his attack a bit more. Matko can play on the wing.

      • Huracan was in the Argentine playoffs that ran into beginning of June. Then they restarted season July 3. Timeline was probably just too tight even if Poch wanted him.

    • Good to see he’s getting respect here despite not even being listed in this article.

He’s one of their most important players. Played all 90+ minutes yesterday.
Top, top quality player that bleeds for the shirt. Shooting and tenacity are his strengths.

    • Only 10 touches in 54 minutes and the goal comes off a corner. I’ll be interested what happens when Chicharito is back. The assist came from American and former LAG MF Daniel Aguirre.

I most interested to see if Richie gets a call in the fall. Reports were Poch and staff didn’t see him as a RB, Chivas is playing him in MF.
