Kristoffer Lund missed out on Serie A promotion with Palermo but reportedly still could be earning first division minutes next season.
German Bundesliga club Koln are targeting Lund ahead of a potential transfer this summer, Kolnische Rundschau reported. Koln won the 2. Bundesliga last season, earning promotion back to Germany’s top-flight.
The 23-year-old left back joined Palermo back in 2023 and has made 72 appearances for them over the past two seasons. He’s scored three goals and added four assists in Palermo colors.
Prior to his move to Italy, Lund played for Danish side Esbjerg and Swedish club Hacken.
A former Danish youth national, Lund switched his allegiance to the United States and made his senior debut in September 2023. He’s earned seven international caps since then, but zero since October 2024.
Should Lund join Koln, he would be the lone American in the first-team squad following Damion Downs’ transfer to EFL Championship side Southampton.
Koln’s competitive season kicks off on August 17 against Jahn Regensburg in German DFB Pokal action.
IV,
“we should be keeping around the ones who play well in soccer games.”
Sure.
But who is the one who figures out if a given player played well?
It seems to me the person who is the best judge of that is the one who it affects the most, the manager.
It seems to me managers call in and play the players they believe gives the team the best chance of getting a positive result. If they don’t think you are that person then you don’t play or you don’t even get called in. Most managers I know want to win.
I get the impression you think SBI posters select the team, hence your heavy lobbying for Cole or Gio.
This is not true. Mauricio has never once mentioned Max Arfsten to me.
There was a time, however when National teams were picked by committee.
“the England team was initially selected by a committee, the “International Selection Committee,” until 1963. This committee, composed of FA officials and coaches, was responsible for choosing the team for each match. Walter Winterbottom was appointed as the first full-time manager in 1946, but the committee continued to make the final selection decisions. It was only with the appointment of Alf Ramsey in 1963 that the manager gained full control over team selection.” England won the World Cup three years later.
Now wouldn’t a selection committee like that for the USMNT be a blast! What fun! Imagine being part of that last final meeting before selections were finalized.
in weah’s first few caps under sarachan he had a goal on tunisia and an assist on colombia. you could see immediate promise. he gets involved in about a goal every window. and he scored in the world cup. but by all means let’s drop him based on “club form” or an isolated red.
it’s an interesting if risky career move, but i think he’s toast for the team. he saved his worst caps for right when the new guy was taking over. to me, circle back around in a year or two, see if he’s improved.
At least he’s taking stepping stones, Sweden, Serie B, now lower table Bundesliga. He’s not trying to jump straight to EPL.
Lund will have a lot of opportunity to level up with Koln. Lot’s of defending will be in order. Good place for him to land.
Bundesliga is ALWAYS fun to watch. By all attacking metrics – the best of the top five leagues. They have the best crowds that create the best atmosphere. After Bayern there is solid competition down through the league – no easy games. Hard to watch Serie A in the afternoon after a morning of Bundesliga. Serie A does make for nice background noise for an early afternoon nap though.
Nice. Definitely still have high hopes for him.
Bundesliga could be fun to watch this season.
Sargent, Paredes, Banks, Tillman, Pax, and Cole Campbell with a potential move to Stuttgart.
yeah, i like paredes, i think he could help us in the frontline or defense wide. and i don’t see either spot as locked down. (well, really, i don’t see much of this team as locked down, or at least it shouldn’t be). kind of forgotten. needs to get healthy.
i’d like to see more wide speed and shift the technical guys to the interior.
i think he could help, campbell, and yow, but paredes offers more versatility. what i saw at gold cup nothing at wingback is sorted.
sargent, hard pass. how many more chances do you get off scouting numbers with no proof of NT concept.
ditto paxten aaronson. he has 4 caps and if it weren’t for his club location or hype he wouldn’t be getting more. nothing happens. i am not writing him off for good, bring him back in 2026. but we have finite roster room and finite windows before the world cup. we have other quality players to look at. we need to quit wasting it on players who don’t show anything.
the US is developing a bad problem with accountability and/or picking teams based on NT performance. they go with paper theories too long. there should be a limited set of evolving spots for noobs to make a case and then be replaced by another prospect next time. you should not be a regular if i literally cannot remember you doing something memorable in 4 caps. you shouldn’t even get to 4 caps if the first window isn’t memorable, for that matter.

Define “something memorable.”?
To me Tim Weah getting a red card in Copa America was pretty memorable.
So the USMNT is now supposed to be a circus not a sports team?
it’s not an honorific, an all star team, or like you got recruited to a college. we don’t carry you forever and see what happens. you get a chance. you do something with it or not. we should be keeping around the ones who play well in soccer games.
historically, your window to show something was a single sub or a window max.
it’s basic sports stuff to re-sort your team based on who plays well in the games. you thought something would work. it hasn’t. we have a dozen other prospects to try. this is how U5 works. this is how HS varsity or select works. this is how college works. this is how the pros work. how is that a circus?

Now wouldn’t that be fun? We could run it like American Idol.
