Reigning Scottish Premiership champions Celtic kicked off its title defense with three points on Sunday afternoon in Glasgow.
Cameron Carter-Vickers played the full 90 minutes as Brendan Rodgers’ squad claimed a 1-0 win over St. Mirren. The American defender won five of nine duels, completed 91% of his passes, and made 10 defensive recoveries in the match.
Carter-Vickers has remained one of Rodgers’ leading defensive options this summer and that trend should continue into the bulk of the campaign. The 27-year-old teamed up with Liam Scales in the starting lineup, while fellow American Auston Trusty played the final 25 minutes off of the bench.
Celtic will now prepare for a Matchday 2 trip to Aberdeen on August 10.
In Germany, Julian Green and Johan Gomez both enjoyed league victories.
In the Netherlands, Sergino Dest scored PSV’s winning goal in the Dutch Super Cup victory over Go Ahead Eagles.
In Belgium, Griffin Yow scored his first goal of the season for Westerlo.
In Denmark, Matthew Hoppe scored his first goal in two seasons as Sonderjyske picked up three points at home.
In Mexico, Alex Zendejas assisted once in Club America’s Leagues Cup win.

Milan Iloski is an American current5lyin Denmark. I heard during one of the Leagues Cup broadcasts that he might go to the Union, but if not, please keep us informed about his results in Denmark. He was a standout while on loan with San Diego FC earlier this summer.
Iloski did not dress for Nordsjaelland this week. All reports seem to indicate the deal with Philadelphia is in the final stages of completion.
Both Cole Campbell and Gio Reyna are traveling with Dortmund to their training camp in Austria.
They played a friendly against Lille, and as far as I could tell, Gio didn’t even dress for it.
They’ve been holding them out and for a while Gio was training individually. Cole had “food poisoning” and didn’t train with the group. That they have put both on 29 man roster for their six day training camp in Austria ahead of their final preseason friendly against Juventus next Sunday indicates no moves are imminent.
Dortmund seriously needs to take what they can get for Gio, otherwise he rots on the bench another year and leaves on a free. I’m still struggling with the logic – gee, do I want several million dollars now even if it’s not the $10M I have him “valued” at, or get nothing, ever?
If it’s not working out for a guy, SELL HIM. Their approach has baffled me for years.
They have until September 1st.
Aren’t they also losing $50,000 every week they own his rights but don’t play him. Drawing this out past this window makes no financial sense. Parma has sold three attacking players in recent weeks so perhaps Dortmund is waiting on a better offer. Or they have an unnamed suitor who is waiting to sell their player to afford BvB’s asking price.
JR,
If you really want to get nitpicky every time I try to figure out what the thinking is at BVB when it comes to Gio, it never has made sense.
At one point it seemed as if Terzic had washed his hands of Gio but other forces at BVB did not.
And ever since then its been “should he stay or should he go?” with Gio caught in the middle.
Forget about Gio for a second and think about all the talent that has come and gone just during his time there. Then you look at their trophy haul in that time period and it is pretty meager.
Something is and has been wrong for some time at BVB.
The only reason I wanted to see Gio go to the Galaxy was because he could link up with Marco Reus (and now Son) again. Someone needs to sit down with Reus, get him drunk and find out what exactly is going on with BVB. Now there is a guy who might actually know what the fuck is going on there.
