Reports: Son Heung-Min to become latest major MLS signing

South Korean international Son Heung-Min is reportedly set to become the latest big name coming to MLS.

Son is nearing a deal to join Western Conference club LAFC, GiveMeSport and ESPN reported. Tottenham is set to receive roughly $20 million, which would near the amount that Atlanta United paid last winter to acquire Emmanuel Latte Lath.

The Tottenham forward played in what looked to be his final match for the club on Sunday in a friendly against Newcastle United. He was given a rousing ovation as he left the field, receiving a guard of honor from both sets of players.

Son, 33, spent the last 10 years with Tottenham, helping the club reach the UEFA Champions League Final in 2019 and also lift the Europa League trophy last May. He scored 173 goals and added 101 assists in 454 appearances for the North London club.

Son has also remained a consistent performer at international level with South Korea, earning 134 caps to date and scoring 51 goals. He has already helped his country qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place on North American soil.

“It was a perfect moment,” Son said in a club interview following the Newcastle match. “Sharing these beautiful moments are something that I will never forget and I will always appreciate it, from the fans, the players and the gaffer. He understood my situation and was always on my side. He always listened to me and asked what I wanted to do. I have a huge respect and am very grateful.”

LAFC already bid farewell to former French international Olivier Giroud this year, but still has goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on its squad. Lloris is a former club teammate of Son during his time at Tottenham from 2012-24.

Steve Cherundolo’s squad sit sixth in the Western Conference and have their third Leagues Cup group stage match on Tuesday against Tigres.

  1. Wow…..Son Heung-Min is a great signing for LAFC. Impeccable work ethic, quick on the ball, GREAT BALL CONTROL and can shoot with both feet…..in mean Liverpool was interested in him a few years ago, particularly in 2022.
He is coming to one of the big soccer markets in MLS (which is good). Now they just need to do is sign a high-profile midfielder like Luka Modrić AND THE ARE GOLDEN!!!
