The U.S. men’s national team’s mixed results during the September window dropped them in FIFA’s latest rankings.
Mauricio Pochettino’s squad fell one spot to No. 16 in September’s latest rankings list, FIFA announced Thursday. It continues an up-and-down calendar year for the USMNT.
The USMNT started September’s two-match window with a 2-0 home loss at the hands of South Korea before rebounding with a 2-0 win over Japan four days later. Alex Zendejas and Folarin Balogun were the USMNT’s goalscorers during the September window.
Mexico was the other top CONCACAF side to also fall in September’s rankings, dropping to No. 14 overall after also playing the same two opponents as the USMNT. El Tri had a pair of draws against Japan 0-0 and South Korea 2-2 respectively.
There was shuffling at the top of the world rankings as Spain and France both leapfrogged Argentina into the No. 1 and 2 spots respectively. Argentina fell to No. 3 which was the first time they were not in the top spot since December 2022.
England, Portugal, Brazil, Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, and Italy rounded out the Top 10.
The USMNT will have a chance to boost their ranking in the October window with a pair of friendlies against Ecuador and Australia respectively. Uruguay and Paraguay will also face the Americans during the November window, which will be the USMNT’s final matches of 2025.
A lot of U20 nations not going to have some of their better players for this WC. Keep on seeing clubs saying, no. I won’t expect to see Cole Campbell released for it from Dortmund.
