George Campbell has slotted in nicely at English second-tier side West Bromwich Albion and the American defender is poised to remain a large player in Ryan Mason’s squad this season.
Campbell has made 13 appearances for the Baggies since joining last summer from MLS club CF Montreal. The versatile defender has featured as both a centerback and right back in Mason’s squad, playing wherever needed during the first half of the league campaign.
While some players may find it tough to acclimate themselves to a new club, league, and country, Campbell has looked very positive over the opening three months of West Brom’s season.
Although the EFL Championship’s grueling schedule runs into the early stages of May, Campbell already has his goals set for the remainder of his first year in England.
“On an individual point, I want to learn as much as I can and grow into the team as much as I can,” Campbell said in a club interview. “I work as hard as I can every day because I want to improve and continue to get better.
“Playing at right-back is a different physical game to playing at centre-back in terms of running, but there’s also the tactical element of it too,” he added. “I’ve grown up trying to play in every single position so I can be ready to play wherever I am needed. I’ve played on the right side, the left side, the centre of defence and even in midfield before over in the MLS. I try to be versatile and I want to help the team in whatever way possible.”
Campbell missed Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, a match in which fellow American Ethan Horvath registered a six-save clean sheet for the visitors. His status for the upcoming week’s matches against Charlton Athletic and Oxford United remain unknown, but Campbell should be back for the long haul of the fall and winter schedule.
With West Brom fighting to be among the promotion candidates this season and Campbell playing at a high level, he’s determined to continue contributing in order for the Baggies to reach their goals as a club.
“It’s a long season, but being together with the guys and sticking together as a family on the pitch is good and important,” Campbell said.
“I’ve really enjoyed so much of my time here already, both on and off the pitch,” he said. “I want to keep playing games and keep improving and I’m determined to do that.”
The 24-year-old remains an option for the USMNT heading into 2026, especially after earning his senior international debut earlier this year under Mauricio Pochettino.
