Haji Wright misses Coventry City win with calf injury

Coventry City earned a crucial three points against title-challengers Middlesbrough on Tuesday and did so without the services of striker Haji Wright.

Wright missed the 4-2 EFL Championship victory due to a calf injury, manager Frank Lampard confirmed in the build-up to Tuesday’s match. The U.S. men’s national team forward returned to the Sky Blues bench last weekend, but was not risked in a 3-2 comeback victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Coventry City remained top of the league table on Tuesday after using a pair of late goals to pick up three points at the Riverside Stadium. Ellis Simms and Liam Kitching both scored in the opening 15 minutes of the match before Morgan Whittaker’s first-half finish paired with an own goal from Bobby Thomas helped the hosts tie things up after 49 minutes.

The Sky Blues would snatch all the victory at the death with Kitching scoring five minutes before stoppage time and Simms adding an insurance goal off the restart.

Wright’s injury doesn’t sound to be too serious, with Lampard preparing to be without his services for up to two weeks.

“He’s got a small quad injury so he’ll be missing probably for the next couple of games. We’ll see how he goes,” Lampard told reporters. “He got it out in America off the back of the second game [USMNT friendly]. We think it might be up to two weeks. We hope it’s a low level quad.”

Wright has eight league goals to his name this season, but hasn’t scored for Coventry City since October 4.

The league-leaders will next host Charlton Athletic on November 29 before back-to-back road matches against Ipswich Town and Preston North End respectively.
