Josh Sargent will play no part of Norwich City’s weekend showdown with Southampton.
Sargent will follow concussion protocol, which has ruled him out of Saturday’s EFL Championship encounter, Canaries manager Philippe Clement confirmed Friday in his pre-match press conference. The American forward was substituted off in the 44th minute of Norwich City’s 1-1 road draw with Sheffield United on Tuesday after being involved in a collision in the first half.
Sargent’s absence is a major one for the Canaries, given their worrying spot in the league table.
“Josh [Sargent] had a concussion, so we know the rules,” Clement said Friday. “He will be out of the game tomorrow. He was feeling bad after the game, but is starting to feel better. There are clear rules now, we have to take those into consideration.
“The brain is something very important and you cannot take any risks with that, so we will follow the rules as we need to,” he added.
Sargent, 25, leads Norwich City with seven goals this season in all competitions. He recently found the back of the net back on December 6, which marked his first goal at club level since August 30.
Despite Sargent’s best efforts, the Canaries have struggled for most of the season, parting ways with former manager Liam Manning in the fall. Clement was hired in mid-November and has registered a 1-2-2 record since taking over.
Norwich City sits 23rd in the EFL Championship table and are five points back from safety after 20 matches played.
