Ethan Horvath’s loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday ends

Ethan Horvath’s time at Sheffield Wednesday is over.

Horvath’s short-term loan spell with the EFL Championship side concluded Friday, the club announced. The 30-year-old will now return to League One side Cardiff City, but isn’t expected to be part of the club’s plans, sources close to the player confirmed to SBI.

There is interest in Horvath’s services from clubs in England and MLS, sources added.

Big thanks to Ethan and all the best to him.

“Ethan came to us as third goalkeeper at Cardiff and did very well, better than we expected,” Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen said in a statement. “He is a fantastic person and a very good goalkeeper.”

Horvath was signed on loan in August after Pierce Charles suffered a serious injury which kept him out for close to four months. The veteran goalkeeper made 16 appearances for the Owls, registering two clean sheets.

He also earned Man of the Match honors in Sheffield Wednesday’s EFL Cup victory over Premier League visitors Leeds United.

Horvath has played for several clubs in Europe including Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest, Luton Town, and Club Brugge.

He remains a goalkeeping option for the USMNT heading into the FIFA World Cup later this year.
