Lily Yohannes‘ dream first season with Lyon continued on Thursday with the American helping the French giants reach the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals.
Yohannes scored Lyon’s opening goal in an eventual 4-0 second leg victory over Wolfsburg. The 18-year-old midfielder played 69 minutes in the second leg match, as Lyon advanced 4-1 on aggregate to set up a semifinal date with reigning holders Arsenal.
Lyon tied the match on aggregate after 16 minutes with Yohannes dialing up her own number and receiving a fortunate deflection on her effort. Yohannes took a touch atop the Wolfsburg box before delivering a shot that deflected into the bottom-left corner.
It marked Yohannes’ sixth goal of the season across all competitions.
After having one goal waived off in extra time, Lyon finally grabbed a lead through Melchie Dumornay’s go-ahead goal in the 102nd minute.
Damaris Egurrola made it 3-0 on the night before the extra time interval ahead of Tabitha Chawinga’s insurance goal with one minute to play.
Fellow USWNT players Korbin Shrader and Lindsey Heaps also started in this match, with Shrader assisting once and playing 107 minutes. Heaps played 82 minutes in the heart of Lyon’s midfield.
Up next for the American trio is a date with Strasbourg in the Coupe De France semifinals on Sunday.
Lyon, who have already won the league title in France, will begin their two-legged series with Arsenal on April 25.
