Austin FC parts ways with head coach Nico Estevez, sporting director Borrell

Austin FC is making a major shake up in its front office.

The Western Conference club parted ways with head coach Nico Estevez and sporting director Rodolfo Borrell, Austin FC announced Monday. Davy Arnaud has been named the interim head coach as searches begin for the club’s next sporting director and permanent head coach positions.

“Nico has been a trusted ambassador for Austin FC and Austin during his time as Head Coach,” said Austin FC Chief Executive Office and Majority Owner Anthony Precourt. “We believe this team can compete for a playoff position, and given our results thus far, a change is necessary to achieve our goals of qualifying for the playoffs this year and becoming a consistent winner in this League.”

Estevez was hired by Austin FC back in October 2024 and managed the club for 56 matches in all competitions. However, he only won 19 of his 56 matches in charge, including only three of his 14 MLS matches in 2026.

Prior to making the move to Austin FC, Estevez was head coach of FC Dallas and also worked with La Liga club Valencia from 2011-13′. He also worked with the Columbus Crew as an assistant coach under then-head coach Gregg Berhalter and followed Berhalter to the U.S. men’s national team in 2019.

Borrell served in his role since 2023 and previously worked with Barcelona, Manchester City and Liverpool. The Spaniard took over for Claudio Reyna in June 2023 but will depart with Estevez as Austin FC seeks a major turnaround.

“We are grateful to Rodo for his tireless dedication to improving the Club,” added Precourt. “Ultimately, we believe this decision is in the best interest of Austin FC. We know that our fans and our community deserve a winner, and our Ownership group will continue to make the necessary decisions in order to deliver consistently strong results across competitions.”

Arnaud previously served as interim head coach for Austin FC in 2024 when he helped lead them to a 3-2 victory vs. the Colorado Rapids on the final day of the season. He also served as interim head coach of the Houston Dynamo in 2019.

Austin FC will travel to face St. Louis CITY SC on Saturday before entering a two-month break due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
