DeAndre Yedlin has had little time to make a name for himself at Sunderland due to his time away with the U.S. Men’s National Team shortly after his loan move, and the head coach is one of those who wants to learn more about him.

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat told the Sunderland Echo that he has not seen much play from the U.S. Men’s National Team fullback and winger, especially since Yedlin has only trained with the coach three times since his arrival last Friday.

“I don’t know enough about him yet, to be honest,” the Sunderland manager told the Echo. “I’ve seen the videos of him and we saw him against Holland, when he did really well when he came on.

“But you can only see in training what he can bring and if he is better than the others. He only got here on Friday, so we need to work with him more.”

Advocaat saw Yedlin play live in the USMNT’s 4-3 win against Netherlands, and the coach also watched videos of the former Seattle Sounders defender. Despite not seeing as much of him as he would like, Advocaat still thinks Yedlin can cause problems and be useful in his roster.

“He will definitely strengthen our options at fullback,”Advocaat said. “He’s really quick and played for the national team last week more as a right winger, than a fullback, but his pace is superb. It’s all about balance with the fullbacks, between going forwards staying back.”

Sunderland has yet to win a match this season, and sits just above last place in the English Premier League, having allowed the second-most goals in the league (11 in 5 matches). Yedlin is expected to compete for playing time at right back, but could also provide some cover on the right wing.

    • I’m not going to comment on where JK will play him, because schizophrenia rules the day when it comes to USMNT positioning, but I would rather see him get more training as RB. He needs to get better at defensive fundamentals from a high source. I think the rest will come more naturally to him, and he’s still going to get plenty of practice crossing balls in.

  1. Klinsi needs to commit to Yedlin at RB. He has the potential to be a class attacking RB but just an average winger. Either way he needs to settle on a position as he’s caught in limbo and it’s costing him precious developmental minutes at the club level.

    • His club should play him where they think he can help most. The mangers he’s had so far in England are a lot more competent than JK.

    • How exactly is it “costing him precious developmental minutes” at the club level?
-How long has he been there?
-If he’s practiced daily at RB with his club, how exactly is the 6 or 7 days he’s with the NT putting him in limbo? Are those few hundred minutes crushing his thousands of developmental minutes

And while everyone is taking this opportunity to share their expertise, please take the time to list the plethora of speedy right wing options we currently have?
I can’t remember the last time anyone else actually delivered a cross from the right side since Chandler assisted Dempsey

  2. All about the pace.

I wish a coach would rate an American based on their soccer IQ. I still don’t think Yedlin will get play time because of that.
