USMNT vs. Mexico: The Pregame Tailgate

CINCINNATI, OH - NOVEMBER 12: Walker Zimmerman #3 of the United States battles with Raul Jiménez #9 of Mexico for a loose ball during a game between Mexico and USMNT at TQL Stadium on November 12, 2021 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The U.S. men’s national team can take a huge step towards clinching a spot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Thursday night, but will have to overcome rivals Mexico at a hostile Estadio Azteca (10 p.m. ET, Paramount+).

Gregg Berhalter’s side sit level on 21 points with Mexico in the race for an automatic qualification berth. The USMNT defeated Mexico 2-0 in Cincinnati back in November, which extended the Americans winning streak to three matches against their biggest rivals.

Several USMNT starters are unavailable through injury including Weston McKennie, Sergino Dest and Brenden Aaronson. However, Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams remain key leaders for the Americans while Gio Reyna, Jordan Pefok, and Jesus Ferreira have all returned to international action.

Mexico is unbeaten in three-straight qualifiers, defeating Jamaica and Panama in recent months to help ease pressure off of head coach Tata Martino. El Tri continues to rely on Raul Jimenez, Hirving Lozano, and others to lead the offensive charge.
